Reviews of Eating Recovery Center Sacramento
"TLDR; the therapists, clinicians and dietitians are amazing but the administrators and psychiatrists are problematic at best and disastrous at worst. I do not recommend this place to anyone with a non-restrictive dominant eating disorder or to anyone who tends to lean more towards aggressive or even direct communication. I also don’t recommend it to anyone who wants to work primarily on their trauma or depression, this is not a dual diagnosis center. But for your average anorexic, I think this place would be just what the doctor ordered! Overall I found ERC to be a mixed bag when it comes to the quality of care. My immediate treatment team were amazing as were many of the program therapists and administrators. The groups were really great, informative and flexible in general as well. All that being said, I think as an institution, ERC lacks flexibility when it comes to personalized patient care. I went in as a cis male with a binging disorder and from the jump it became very clear that most aspects of the program were designed around the treatment of women with restrictive disorders. There was a hypersensitivity to any kind of conversation beyond small talk and we were expected to wait at meals until everyone was finished before we were allowed to leave. I often was forced to sit at the table for 25 minutes just watching the clock while my peers struggled to eat. Even the wrap up questions at the end of the day were all centered around planning ahead to overcome restrictive behavior with no acknowledgement of the reality of binging behaviors as a possibility to avoid."
"ERC was essential to my recovery journey! I attended VIOP and am so grateful for how accommodating and inspiring my treatment staff were."
"This is a very hard review to leave. I have read through every review left on here and it saddens me to agree on some parts. But there are points where I do disagree. With that said, I do understand that staff & the program may not be the same as when others were there. There is a somewhat new program director, Jane, and psychiatrist, Dr. Gilley, and whole slew of new primary therapist and 2 newish dietitians. While I was there, I saw how they made some program and staff readjustments to make the program more effective. My experience was bittersweet. I absolutely loved my treatment team. Every staff there was involved in my care whether I liked it or not. The support given to me was above & beyond, and for that, I am greatly appreciative. Dr. Gilley was very involved at first. It really seemed like she cared, and she did. Jane, the director of the program, was highly involved in my care as well. Her open door was an invitation she took seriously. Whenever I needed a check-in, she was there. Talk about check-ins, Eli, man, Eli was ALWAYS there for me. I think I talked to her more then I talked with my own therapist there, who unfortunately was only there 3 days a week and had no time for extra anything. That brings me to my therapist, Lisa. Lisa was awesome as well. She has such a sweet spirit & kind heart. She held boundaries when needed to and pushed me hard. Then there's my dietitian, Shannon. Shannon was a great dietitian. It's great when a dietitian in an eating disorder program can talk about things other than then just the food. She would ask me what skills could I use when I felt... She's a bulldog too, she does not play. She pushed me so hard & expected me to step up for myself & my own healing. She was so supportive. There were others there who were not a part of my treatment team who took time to support me when I needed it, I thank them for that. Now, for the parts that hurt me the most and where I agree with other reviews. I was discharged & given 3 days to get in another program and make appointments with my outpatient team. That was unrealistic. I was discharged because they said that they felt that I needed to be somewhere where I could work on my trauma. After leaving, I wasn't able to get in to see my outpatient team for two weeks. I'm still on the waitlist for the program that they recommended. Before leaving, the psychiatrist told me that she could make a case for me to go to residential, yet you discharge me with no plan or care in place & leave me out there to fin for myself with no help or support? If I could have done it by myself, I would not have been in that level of care in the beginning. I'm so confused. Then there's my eating disorder versus my trauma. Which one do I work on because it's obvious that I'm not to work on both. They tell me that I need to work on my trauma but if I'm restricting to the point where my brain can't function, how do I go through the program they recommended? Do I ignore the eating disorder? I told myself that if my PHP treatment team didn't think it was important enough for me to be in treatment for my eating disorder, then my level of restricting must be okay & acceptable. I'm also confused because ERC is supposed to be able to support people with trauma as well as people with an co-occurring diagnosis. But they discharged me because my trauma was causing them to have to support me too much. Wow, that hurts. I still love my team though, just not the decision they made. I wish I could have been the perfect patient, but then I would not have needed to be there in the first placer. I also found out after I left, that my therapist specializes in trauma. I'm so confused. Why couldn't they create a treatment plan that supported me with my eating disorder and my trauma? Not every treatment facility will be a good fit for every person, it doesn't mean it's a bad place. Find what works for the patient & go from there. Make programs like this better by giving direct, in the moment, feedback if you don't like something."
"ERC Sacramento is truly a lifesaver! My daughter struggled with an eating disorder, and this center was the beacon of hope we needed. The staff showed immense care and dedication to their patients, and their lengthy parent sessions were incredibly helpful in guiding us through the process. Shannon, the dietician, was exceptional in arranging personalized meal plans and providing guidance to parents on managing their kids’ meals. Danielle, the therapist, displayed unwavering dedication to her job, going above and beyond by spending extra time to support parents during stressful times. I can’t thank ERC Sacramento enough for giving my daughter a chance to reclaim her life and overcome her eating disorder. A five-star review is well-deserved for this exceptional center."
"For the most part, the staff at ERC is very friendly but that's not why you're going to a PHP. This facility is unorganized, and the therapists seem to have little experience with ED kids. For the amount, they bill insurance it's a joke. My child has made more strides in the right direction in 3 days at residential than in 3 weeks at ERC. Please DO NOT send your child here unless you want them to work with an inexperienced therapist."
