Reviews of SAGE Veterinary Centers - San Francisco
"Dr. Robin Kelly was great with my dog. Our emergency visit was quick, thorough, and she/the staff made sure we got the care we needed without anything unnecessary to be added to the bill. The location is a bit rough around the edges but the care is good!"
"Our 7 year old cat was in need of prescribed 24-hour iv antibiotics asap and Sage was suggested. I called before going and let them know what I was going for. I waited over an hour to have someone talk with me and later our cat was taken into the back. I was told to go into a room where I was informed that they had seen our vet’s tests and bloodwork and that they were inadequate and would have to do their own test which would take another hour. I asked the cost which they showed to me on a computer screen. It was more than $10,000. I was shocked. Our cat was still untreated. The doctor came in and informed me that she could not administer the antibiotics without their testing which was an additional cost. I told her that this is like a car dealership and that I wanted my cat back. The experience was totally impersonal and focused solely on how many things they could add on. It was a horrible experience I don’t wish on any pet or person. I took him home. He is on the antibiotics now and is recovering."
"I'm always weary about going to SAGE bc of the insanely high prices I used to pay when I needed SFVS's help (SF Veterinary Specialists was its previous incarnation). HOWEVER, they are a godsend and an indispensable resource when you really need it most. On Christmas Eve, my beloved 12-year-old pointer/pitbull mix suddenly couldn't bear weight on his left hind leg and was holding it up in distress while trying to hop around on 3 legs. With their ER open 24 hrs/day, we were seen within an hour by an excellent ER doc (Dr. Edelson) who read his x-ray herself, and astutely (and gently) gave us the horrifying news that to her it looked suspicious for potential bone cancer. She sent it out for a formal radiology read (+ ~$150), which came back the next day (Christmas!) and confirmed the worst---osteosarcoma. Let me just say: the $150 addt'l charge was worth every penny--and then some!). We were offered spots for an Oncology consultation and additional imaging within 3 days (even 2, if we could make it work)--and mind you, this is the week bw Christmas & New Years when most places have severely limited to no availability! The Oncologist (Dr. Andres) was a breath of fresh air: compassionate, honest, thoughtful, experienced, and realistic. We could've done a full-body CT that day for $5k (full-body is costly), but she told us to hold off and think a bit more carefully about the options (comfort care only; palliative radiation to buy an additional 3 months [~$14-15k]; or, amputation and chemotherapy to buy an additional 9 - 12 months [~$23k]). There is no cure. If we decide to go the comfort-care only route, there's no need to spend a fortune on a full-body CT, or even the more affordable ultrasound and chest X-ray option, bc these will ultimately not alter management. She even suggested that she call in the scripts to CostCo's pharmacy (the only pharm in SF that stocks meds for pets, at a fraction of the cost you'd pay in a Vet's office). Really appreciated her counsel and the substantial immediate savings to us. It has been a horrible, wretched time. But I want to offer my HIGHEST praises to SAGE for their mindful care and support thus far. As we navigate thru this awful decision making, it feels so reassuring to have a top-notch veterinary center that's open 24 hrs and has such an excellent medical and support staff, all just a 15 min drive away. Don't get me wrong--the prices for treatment can be incredibly challenging--but that's a reality of veterinary care. Frankly, their prices aren't actually much higher compared to other SF Vet hospitals, and what you get for your money here is *extremely* high quality care, with experience that shows. We're so grateful for you, SAGE. THANK YOU for your commitment to top-notch care that's delivered with love!"
"I always have a great experience at Sage. They worked around the clock to help my sick kitty with a respiratory infection. She's doing great. They have also helped my boy cat as well. I'm so thankful to have such a caring team here in San Francisco to help us in times of need. Thank you Sage!! Our family really appreciates you all!"
"My experience at SAGE has been great. In all honesty, going to SAGE is expensive, but it is a veterinary emergency center. When has an emergency room visit ever been “affordable”? But, in my experience, they will treat your (fur or feather) baby with urgency and care… And that is what you want at that moment! I can’t say enough good things about SAGE. (Just make sure that you have pet insurance.)"
