Reviews of Athletic Lab Physical Therapy and Performance Training
"I can’t speak highly enough about my experience at Athletic Lab, specifically with PT and clinic co-owner Lyssa. In early August I injured my foot in a group workout class at a different PT practice in Santa Monica. I had pain under my big toe and trouble walking but didn’t think it was serious. I took it easy for a few weeks but it didn’t resolve on its own so I finally sought a professional opinion at the end of August. It took two different podiatrists and an MRI to correctly diagnose my injury: grade 2 turf toe. This is where you sprain your big toe and the ball of your foot joint. I’d never even heard of it before because it mostly affects professional football players and my doctor told me it could really only resolve with several weeks of total rest followed by progressive reloading of my foot. I spent an agonizing month wearing a walking boot and got a PRP injection to speed up the healing process. Fast forward to early October and I was eager to start PT. I called every single PT clinic on the west side of LA and out of dozens I spoke with, only two had prior experience treating this specific and rare injury, and this was one. I chose Athletic Lab due to its proximity to my apartment, their knowledge and experience, and the fact that it’s a woman-owned business with a ton of positive reviews, and I AM SO HAPPY THAT I DID. Lyssa was thorough and empathetic in my intake assessment and laid out a timeline for me to get back to running, hiking, and doing all the things that I love. She was honest but optimistic about how my injury would respond to PT. After wearing a walking boot for a month and being terrified that every step I took might cause me pain, we really had to start small and progress extensively to get me back not only to my former level of fitness but to being comfortable just doing normal things again, like grocery shopping and walking to my local farmers market. One of the first appointments I had with Lyssa I asked her to help me figure out something that I normally wouldn’t even think twice about — how to safely walk down stairs. I live up a set of stairs and they gave me anxiety because going down was really painful and difficult when I was injured. She was so helpful and understanding and helped me build back trust in my body and in myself as I recover, and knowing what is normal pain versus what is not. She’s non-judgmental and great at helping me cope with both the physical aspects of my injury as well as the mental ones — anxiety has been one of my biggest hurdles. I know I can go to her with questions or fears and she will reassure me and get me back on track. I can even text her over the weekends if I need support. I find Lyssa to be extremely capable, knowledgeable, responsive and confident, striking the right balance of meeting me where I’m at but knowing where to challenge me in my recovery process. Fast forward to today and Lyssa helped me reach the two goals I had set out when we first met: running a turkey trot on Thanksgiving day, and getting to take a monthlong trip to Australia I had been planning over New Years. I went from being in a walking boot at the beginning of October to running 3 miles at the end of November. Incredible. Not only am I back to more confidently doing the activities I love, but I feel like I’m also stronger and in better shape overall. I’m continuing to see Lyssa twice a week as our sessions transition from PT to strength. She also gave me a helpful workout routine that I can do from anywhere while on vacation. Athletic Lab is the only PT place I’ve ever been where you get a full hour of hands-on 1:1 time directly with a PT and not aides. I’m so so so grateful to them for their help and patience to get me back out there. I highly recommend this practice whether you’re facing an injury or just want to get stronger and meet your goals with someone who really knows their stuff."
"I’m a 35M who exercises regularly, plays competitive beach volleyball (CBVA A/AA) and competitive golf. I have had knee and lower back issues for the last 3 years and tried to rehab on my own, along with going to other Physical Therapists with no results. I had an initial assessment with Lauren who took a data based approach to assess where each muscle group was strong/weak and tight/flexible. She quickly identified the root cause of my pain and put forth a plan to rehab and strengthen my problem areas. After seeing Lauren once a week for two months, I was squatting and jumping pain free for the first time in 3+ years. Lauren has a complete grasp of the human body and how each muscle group is supposed to work together. I could not recommend Lauren and her team at Athletic Lab enough."
"Lauren and the team are absolutely fantastic. I spent a year rehabbing my ACL with a more conglomerate PT service (those where you get the PT for 20 mins then an assistant) and when my meniscus re-tore I found Lauren / Athletic Lab. We are working to get me back to running confidently, and to get me back to skiing comfortably. I couldn't be happier with their support and I always have a great time. They push me hard, but as an athlete, that's exactly what I want!"
"Where do I even begin?! I had the best experience with my physical therapy at Athletic Lab. I was a little nervous going out of network but I'm so happy I did. The level of attention and care I received from Lyssa was exceptional. She really listened to my needs and catered my program to fit perfectly. For some background, I had major reconstructive surgery on my feet 20 years ago and want to avoid having another surgery. Lyssa worked with me for 10 weeks and explained how everything is connected and designed a program to strengthen my arches, calves, and glutes. Thank you, Lyssa and Athletic Lab!"
"I had a fantastic experience at Athletic Lab thanks to Lauren Freitas. I had persistent pain while running in my right knee that was not getting better after icing, stretching, and rest. I tried to run through the pain for a few weeks but found that none of my usual tactics were easing the pain. Fortunately, my personal trainer referred me to Lauren, who quickly identified the root issues. Lauren crafted a personalized program that strengthened key muscle groups in my legs and glutes. Under her guidance, I was able to work my way back up to my normal mileage in about 7 sessions. I feel like a stronger runner and I know more about how to prevent injuries as well. Lauren's expertise and dedication are evident in her sessions and I’m so happy I didn’t wait longer and let my knee get further injured. If you're looking for exceptional PT experience I highly recommend Athletic Lab!"
