Reviews of Equinox South Bay
"I became a member last month and could not be more satisfied. The staff is friendly, helpful and welcoming. Shoutout to Brennen (Membership Advisor) who assisted me during the sign up process. He was great and explained everything I needed to know. I’d also like to give all the praise to Maria Garcia and Marzena Janasik - they are the best (overall) group class instructors I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. They take the workout session very seriously, pay close attention on how students perform their movements and are great at queueing. Overall, this is definitely one of the best gyms I’ve ever been to. It’s clean, it’s organized and it’s well managed."
"I went to both the MDR and South Bay locations collectively for several years. The facility itself is great, the people are top notch, and it's definitely an excellent place to work out. Having said all that, I am writing a negative review because their accommodations for childcare are limited and, most importantly, they rely on shady, archaic contract terms to lock people into memberships with them, even if they don't want them or can no longer effectively use them. MDR closed down their Kids Club during the pandemic and it never returned. South Bay's Kids Club is still open, but the hours are largely incompatible with working parents, with the exception of Saturday from 8-12, which tends to fill up very quickly and cost an additional $20/visit. You need to book Kids Club in advance through the app, but it often reaches capacity OR the app occasionally bugs out and doesn't let you reserve even when there is capacity, resulting in multiple visits to the gym only to be turned away due to insufficient capacity. Since my membership with Equinox used to be through a partner (GymPass), my tenure with the gym didn't count towards their "introductory period," meaning that when their partnership with GymPass ended and I needed to go through them directly, I was required to maintain my membership with them for another year, regardless of whether or not I had the ability or desire to use that membership more than a couple times per month. Due to only being able to make it over to the gym 1-2x/mo, I attempted to cancel my membership. I explained to them that I had been with Equinox for several years, enjoyed going there, but wasn't able to make use of my membership beyond the 1-2x/mo, so it didn't make sense to continue paying $200+/mo for a membership I couldn't use. They told me, sorry, you still have to maintain membership for another 4 months because we have a 1 year contract on you, no exceptions. My previous tenure with Equinox through GymPass didn't count for anything--they had a contract that locked me in, so they were determined to enforce it on technicality, with zero goodwill towards me despite my history with them. I even experienced an injury after a HIIT class with them that set me back about 3 weeks of non-usage after injury to my ankle but didn't think to pause my membership for medical reasons--I was a member and that's giving goodwill to the business to not try to take advantage the second something isn't working. I would have hoped they would extend the same type of courtesy and goodwill in return. Equinox is great if you both want to use it and can make use of it--as I mentioned, they have great equipment, some excellent classes, and the steam room is excellent. However if they think it's good business to force people to pay them in excess of $200/mo when they aren't even using their membership, they lost my respect and I no longer consider renewing with them if/when my circumstances change and I'd be able to go back. Equinox--you're right, you got a contract on me stipulating that you have me and my significant other trapped to keep paying you guys $200+/mo each for a remainder of $1,600 total between the two of us for service after the date we asked to cancel--you can take our money, but we are not coming back after this treatment. Equinox--if you want to make my money, it should be in exchange for use of your service. If you have to leverage contract terms that force me to commit my money to you even if I no longer want the service, that's no way to do business in 2024, and I will not forget this. I am writing this so that if you plan to join up with Equinox, while it's a great place to work out, be aware you will be subject to shady dinosaur-era contract terms they use to trap people into paying them money that they frankly didn't earn."
"Hardly a "luxury" gym and they require 30 days notice to cancel? Why so they can continue to not fix the leaks, or the showers, or the equipment? Really poorly managed"
""Disappointing Customer Service at Equinox South Bay Gym" I am normally reserved when it comes to writing reviews, but my recent experience at Equinox Gym in South Bay has compelled me to share my thoughts. There's no denying that Equinox boasts some of the best fitness facilities around, but what truly makes a gym stand out is its staff. Unfortunately, the level of customer service I received from two employees, Danny (female) and Tiffany, was far from satisfactory. I made an early morning trip to the gym, arriving at 5 a.m., expecting a smooth and speedy check-in process to maximize my workout time. However, Danny and Tiffany were less than accommodating. Their approach was not only unprofessional but also lacked the basic courtesy you would expect from employees of a reputed establishment like Equinox. There was a distinct lack of urgency shown by the concierge’s both Danny and Tiffany, who seemed more interested in their personal conversation than in assisting me with my check-in. They were dismissive and unresponsive to my questions, and it took an unnecessarily long time to figure out the issue just to be turned away and not granted access to the gym for a billing error on their end. As a paying member of Equinox, I feel let down by the lack of professionalism and customer service demonstrated by these two employees. It's disheartening to see that despite the high membership fees, the level of customer service does not match the premium that Equinox charges. In conclusion, a gym is more than its equipment and facilities; it's about the people who run it. I hope Equinox South Bay can improve its customer service, particularly in the early hours of the day, to better serve its dedicated members. For now, I'm left feeling disenchanted and considering other fitness options."
"I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with the facility and all it has to offer. From the moment I stepped in, I could tell that a lot of thought and effort had gone into making the gym a welcoming and comfortable place to work out. The spacious layout of the gym is fantastic, and I appreciate the abundance of cardio machines available for use. The variety of classes offered is also impressive, catering to all levels of fitness. The availability of free weights and machines is also great, as it allows for a well-rounded workout. I particularly enjoyed the outside workout deck, which provides a unique workout experience. The pool area is also fantastic, and I found it to be a great place to unwind after a workout. The hot sauna and steam room were an added bonus, and I appreciated having access to these amenities. The personal training has truly been the standout feature for me. Steven is an excellent trainer who pushes his clients to reach their full potential. I appreciate that he challenges me and doesn't let me get too comfortable, which has helped me see significant improvements in my fitness level. Lastly, the ample parking is a definite plus, but as you mentioned, it would be great to see some EV chargers installed in the future. Overall, I would highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a comprehensive fitness experience. With its spacious layout, wide range of equipment and classes, and excellent personal training, it truly has something for everyone. Keep up the fantastic work!"
