Reviews of St. Croix Preparatory Academy
"This school has been amazing for my kids! We feel so fortunate that our kids were at SCPA through these stressful Covid years - St. Croix Prep did a wonderful job while in the hybrid model of teaching. My kids felt supported during that difficult (for all of us!) year and I do not feel my children fell behind after the 2020/21 school year. It is an academically challenging school and we were aware of this fact well before our first child started Kindergarten. Is there homework? Of course! We are grateful that our kids are held accountable for doing assignments, staying organized and taking responsibility for their work. They have learned how to advocate for themselves & communicate with adults (teachers, coaches, admin etc.). And I especially love the small school K-12 campus. There are opportunities for the older students to interact with the younger students which contributes to the small school culture."
"When we were first accepted into Prep, we were so excited for my son. He is a high achiever and needs to be academically challenged. The school does provide an academic challenge, however pushes the kids so hard that there is room for nothing other than school work. Every night, on the weekends, and even during the summer. No time to be a child. The school board is disrespectful of parents. Administration does not respond to emails if you have concerns. I wish we had chosen a different path."
"Right off the bat, I do not recommended this school. I have been at St Croix Prep for 8 Years now and when I got into 5th grade I realized this school is not what my parents said it was. They claimed it was an amazing school with a wonderful academic program, and it does have a very good academic program; a little too good of one. If you are a parent that has a kid or is sending a kid to this school it is good to know that this school focuses far too much on academics, if you value your child's time at home this is not the school for you because they give very large sums of homework daily giving your child very little time at home to do what they want. They next thing I need to say is how much they enforce dress code, you have to wear expensive uniforms everyday, but sometimes they give you a "non-uniform" day, I say "" because it is barely a non-uniform day because of what they enforce. You are basically wearing a uniform because you have to stay with all of their guidelines for non-uniform days. Sure the school has decent, hard-working teachers so I considered giving it a 2 or 3 star review. The school has to work on spending there money a little better because at the start of every year of middle school I would see a stack of 10-20 tv's out in the hallway even though the school already has far too many of them...everywhere. I rarely see improvements to sports systems and basic school supplies in the classrooms I only ever see more tv's and new apple computers everywhere. If you are a student at this school you get little say in what happens and you rarely get informed on large changes that happen. Very few events happen that are of interest to the students, I never see field trips happen... but those are hard to say they were fun we had no where to go and had to wear uniforms during them?! I don't know why but that does not make the "fun" field trips fun. The students are forced so much do focus on academics they begin to loose interest..fast, believe me I lost interest in a matter of 1-2 years. So it is a good idea to send your students to this school if your main focus is academics but your child will not like it. Every year more students leave the school than kids come. All in all this is a good school for academics and only academics and they have good teachers to teach the curriculum but it is not a great school to send your kid to."
"Great school which carries on values we hold as a family including respect, independence and self-motivation. Although there is some teacher turnover, the education style and quality persists. Many teachers have been with school for up to 7 years and know our children as they have grown up. The school does a great job adding good teachers excited to be there - no 'dance of the lemons'. The school is demanding and the style is not for all, but they do prepare the children for life beyond school, not just learning content."
"I have two very different children, one having several challenges (Special Needs) and the other off the charts for academics, etc. This school saved my children. They started in Grades 8 and 9, and the atmosphere was welcoming, encouraging, and inclusive. My boys' self-esteem, and grades moved up tremendously and they now feel good about themselves, are confident, and above all, emotionally healthy. Regarding my child with Special Needs, we had applied to quite a few Charter schools in other areas of the country and were always given the same story, that there were not enough people to support him, so he was denied acceptance, but they were always wanting my other son. I had just about given up, when I found SCPA. They not only welcomed him, they embraced him as an individual, and immersed him with the rest of the students. He was asked to be the Basketball Manager and included in all school events and activities. The other students wanted to be his friend and are the first ones to support and stand up for him when there are issues outside of school. This is rare, especially at his age. My other son, who had spent about three months at another school when we first moved here, had trouble fitting in and started to hang with a crowd that would not be of benefit to him socially, emotionally, and academically. As we were new to the State of MN, I felt is was important to meet the teachers, etc., and the only one that responded asked me why I wanted to meet at all as they were very busy. I was a teacher for many years, and communication is extremely important, and absolutely EVERY email I have written has been responded to within a day at the very latest. I truly believe these teachers and administrators really care. Since I began teaching, I have been at several schools and have not seen this type of support and strong communication with, not only myself, but the children as well. The Administration ALWAYS has time to talk with my boys. They really know them well. I HIGHLY recommend St Croix Preparatory Academy if you want successful, well-rounded, responsible, hard-working, and especially emotionally healthy children. I cannot say enough about the school and how wonderful it has been for my children. The lessons inside and outside of the classroom will be lifelong."
