Greenlining Institute - Casa Joaquin House

The Greenlining Institute - Casa Joaquin House is a transformative residential leadership program located at 2336 Piedmont Avenue in Berkeley, California. Founded in 1970 by Chicano/Latino students at UC Berkeley, Casa Joaquin is designed for full-time undergraduate students dedicated to advancing racial equity. The program offers a nurturing living environment for low- and moderate-income, first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds, just blocks away from the UC Berkeley campus.

With a holistic approach to leadership development, Casa Joaquin provides a home away from home for 40 University of California—Berkeley students each year. Through community building, academic support, and leadership development workshops, Casa aims to support students in completing their college education and growing as leaders.

The program, originally named the La Raza Student Cooperative House, has a rich history of involvement in student strikes and social justice efforts. In 2004, Casa was acquired by the Greenlining Institute and integrated into its Leadership Academy, serving over 30 UC Berkeley students annually.

Interested students can apply for the program for the 2024-25 academic year by filling out an interest form. Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled or incoming full-time UC Berkeley undergraduate students, with proof of vaccination required. Rent includes wi-fi, and residents have access to a kitchen, living room, and study room open 24 hours a day. Meal plan purchases will be reimbursed for all residents.

Residents are required to pay a refundable security deposit and sign a housing contract before moving in. Room assignments are made based on preferences provided in the application. Residents must adhere to community agreements, including quiet hours and a strict policy of no alcohol, tobacco, or drugs in the building.
