About the Tamalpa Institute
Located in San Rafael, California, the Tamalpa Institute was founded in 1978 by dance and expressive arts therapy pioneers Anna Halprin and Daria Halprin. This internationally recognized institution offers unique classes and programs throughout the year for individuals looking to incorporate creativity through movement, dance, and expressive arts therapy into their personal lives and professional practices. The institute also trains and empowers future leaders to use dance and expressive arts as a catalyst for change and transformation in their communities and beyond.
One of the institute's online series, "Reimagining Demeter: Moving the Mother Archetype Forward in Art and Life," guides participants to explore their connections to the story of Demeter through the Tamalpa Life/Art Process. Other workshops, such as "Movement Ritual & Dance Explorations" and "Spring Self-Portraits," offer supportive and artful practices for personal growth and healing.
In memory of Anna Halprin, who passed away in 2021, the institute continues to honor her legacy and passion for dance. The Mountain Home Studio, where much of the Tamalpa work takes place, sits on the traditional territory of the First Nations Coast Miwok peoples. The institute acknowledges and respects Indigenous lands and communities worldwide.
Overall, the Tamalpa Institute provides a space for individuals to explore their creativity, heal through artmaking, and connect with themselves and their communities in meaningful ways.

Reviews of Tamalpa Institute
"Studying at Tamalpa Institute was a life-changing experience that I'm so grateful I had! At Tamalpa, I used artistic practices like movement, drawing and writing to explore my relationship with past psychological issues and with my own creativity. Daria Halprin and the other faculty were excellent resources throughout my studies. I got a lot of healing and growth out of this experience. While I'm not working in this field, I still use the tools and experiences I had with the Tamalpa Life/Art Process in both my personal and professional life."
"The somatic education of Tamalpa Institute supported me in my personal and professional growth. As a result, I feel now deeply connected to myself, my needs, my life, and the people around me. I use the creative Life Art® tools in my daily life and self-care practice. Through coaching and workshops, I support others to also use the tools in their healing journey and self-care practice, Liesbeth de Jong, certified Life Art Process® practitioner, coach, author, dance improvisation teacher"
"My training at the Tamalpa Institute was a life changing experience. I am deeply grateful for this work which allowed me to come back home to my body and to live an embodied life. As a Tamalpa Practitioner I am in awe of the power of this work. Using the Tamalpa Life/Art Process I have witnessed lasting powerful transformations and seen my clients move towards a life filled with passion, creativity, and joy."
"As a graduate of Tamalpa Institute, I have strongly benefitted from the impactful movement-based expressive arts teachings and methodology that is offered here. This work has shaped my career for over 20 years. In addition to the foundation the Tamalpa work provided for my career, I also found personal healing, and met a community of people that have become lifelong friends. Tamalpa has made a significant mark in the fields of dance, somatic education and expressive arts therapy and this rich history is imprinted by each student who enters the training."
"Tamalpa changed my life in profound, joyful and powerful ways. I remember how strong is the Tamalpa container, how powerful is the work and how engaged is the Tamalpa community. All along my training, I was amazed to feel so much in my body and in my heart, to discover the beauty of expressive arts. As I was writing, drawing, dancing, singing, I let the most meaningful and intimate dance arise, I got reconnected to the pleasure of drawing and it opened up ways of inner transformation. I remember the wisdom of my teachers, the beauty of esthaetic responses from my Tamalpa fellows, the magic of Tamalpa circles. All of this was true and felt experiences I’ll never forget. I'm so happy to be part of the Tamalpa community and to share it now with my clients, in collective and individual sessions."
