Northern California Institute for Research and Education

The Northern California Institute for Research and Education is a scientific community of clinicians and researchers located in San Francisco, California. Partnered with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS), our institution is dedicated to bringing the power of modern medicine to the health of our nation’s Veterans.

One of our recent studies, led by Drs. Phyllis Tien and Jorge Kizer, focuses on the impact of HIV and HIV-specific factors on myocardial disease in women. This research aims to close the gap in research between men and women with HIV, specifically looking at cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with HIV.

Additionally, our Principal Investigator Dr. Bruce Ovbiagele has addressed disparities in the global epidemiology of stroke, highlighting the increasing burden of stroke in low- and middle-income countries. His research aims to reduce the burden of stroke and improve prevention strategies for this debilitating disease.

Furthermore, our institution is proud to announce collaborations with UCSF and SFVAHCS on real-world evidence studies focusing on chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes. These studies aim to improve timely access to treatment for individuals with CKD, a condition that affects a significant portion of the American population.
