Reviews of The Meadows Apartments
"Update: 2 months in, they finally had a new unit available which they moved me into. Not only is the internet jack not even installed in the wall, but the HEAT IS TURNED OFF. I called to inform them that the temperature inside was below the legal limit (the outside temp was 40°F). Was told that management hadn't told them to turn on the heat yet and to simply wait. They are literally in violation of the law and don't care. Calling the building inspector tomorrow. My move-in date was 01 August 2023. Here are some of the lovely gems that I walked in on: A large pile of trash/construction waste in the kitchen, including nails/screws, and clothes from a previous tenant. A previous tenants dishes were left in the dishwasher. Human hairballs/Bobby pins left in the bathroom. Blinds installed entirely backwards. All of the interior doors are painted over so thick they don't close properly. The internet jack was installed backwards, preventing me from accessing my internet. The entire (non-smoking) apartment building absolutely reeks of cigarettes. I discovered these problems at around 2:00 p.m., about an hour after the movers left. I reported it all and was told maintenance/Cleaning wasn't available until the next day (remember it's only 2 p.m), so I had to pay to shower in a 24h Planet Fitness nearby on my first day at the apartment because the bathroom is unsanitary. Also attached is a picture of the itemized list of charges deducted from the PREVIOUS tenants' security deposit, clearly listing cleaning and trash removal services that did not occur. To summarize: I moved into an unsanitary apartment mid-way through construction, let alone maintenance. EDIT: updating my review from 1 to 2 stars because the front desk/office staff have been extremely receptive and helpful in figuring all this out. However, this still does not excuse the unsanitary living conditions nor the seemingly erroneous charges to the previous tenants' deposit."
"Meadows scam people, we had applied prior and got accepted only if we could get a cosigner. Meadows told us the cosigner had to make 3x income. We turn the application for the cosigner in, and then they suddenly say its 4x. Told us to reapply and have a new cosigner. We reapply, and they said we didn't qualify for a cosigner, which is weird because it was in a 2 month's time spand from when we last reapplied. All in all, we spent $150 for both times just to be told we don't qualify anymore when we did before. Just a note they tried telling us our credit score wasn't up to their standard, but when we reapplied the second time, our credit score was better than the first time we applied so it was pretty obvious that they were just trying to get money. Stay away!"
"Avoid staying here if at all possible. Once we were in the situation to leave, we left running. Leasing office staff constantly turned over and if anyone confirmed something for you, another staff member would deny they told you. Get everything in writing because they WILL gaslight you. We purchased a parking pass for a vehicle and they towed it. They left a notice but we were out of town and came back to that fun surprise. The office staff refused to help in any way even though we PAID to park there. This was also another instance where we told staff the car was having issues and we were told it was ok to park while out of town. Then they had it towed anyways and said "none of the staff would have told us it was ok". There was assigned parking spots in the Swanton complex and our car was hit two times causing over $2000 in damage. There are no cameras and fake notes were left by whoever hit our car. We were able to switch spots but only after the second hit and run. Maintenance doesn't seem to have the knowledge to fix some issues. Most submitted claims were fixed perfectly and quickly. Others we had to submit the request multiple times before the issue was fixed. The garbage bins aren't big enough for the amount of people on the Swanton side so there was always trash on the ground and rolling through the parking lot. Honestly even if you are a past resident, the drama will follow you. We sublet the last three months of our lease in 2021 and are still listed as residents! It has been almost two years!! That is illegal and we would have never found out if the new payment system hadn't automatically emailed us for March's rent. Long story short, if you can afford to live anywhere else, DO IT. The amount of headaches and damages to your property isn't worth it."
"I wish I had better things to say. One problem with this place was maintenance entering without any notice. When I brought this up to the leasing office they said there is a button when submitting a repair request that lets them come in whenever, usually weeks after the request. An other problem we had was them not wanted to fix the vent in our bathroom. We noticed yellow/brown spots collecting on our ceiling, despite running the fan for hours. It got so bad that the paint on the ceiling started to bubble. The office's solution to this was to redo the mudding and repaint, but they did not fix the fan. In fact, I scheduled a meeting to talk to the office about this problem and they told me the building is old and that's just how the vents are. They even went as fair as to recommend we open our bedroom windows (in the winter ) to let the moisture out. Then my neighbors had put in a repair order because the vents to the dryers were sitting behind the dyer, unconnected to the vent. AKA a huge fire hazard. Each apartment is also different but rent is the same. For example our neighbor have linoleum in their bathroom instead of the terribly ugly yellow tile we have. They also have nicer carpet and kitchen cabinets that are updated. However, we all pay the same amount in rent. Overall, I am not impressed and will certainly not be renewing my lease."
"I lived here for a year and got my full security deposit back, but had one "incident" (nonsuffient funds check...Life happens, right?). I give you all this background so that you know my review is not just me taking my "revenge" on the apartment/property management. Please take note of the fact that almost all the positive reviews for this place are from accounts with only one review (whereas, I am a google local guide). Also note that some of the five star reviews have a number (e.g., 229T1 would have been mine) at the end. This is because property managment bribes tenants with money off their rent if they write a positive review. I understand that when a new management group takes over a property techniques like this are used to rebuild a positive reputation. But usually this is after the management has made positive improvements. This is not the case here. I considered giving the Meadows two stars, because after all it is habitable and if you really cannot find anywhere else it will be fine, but I could not, in good faith, give them the second star. I outline some of the reasons below: 1. It seems like if you are lucky and get a unit near the leasing office or on the "Swanton side" of the complex, your experience may be better. But if you live way at the back of the complex, there will be mattresses, filth, and broken bottles galore as you walk the parking lot. I understand that property managment cannot physically stop people from throwing out larger furniture but the least they could do is send out a mass email communication to residents that the dumpsters are not meant for mattress, couches, etc. But, given the toilet in one of the pictures, even their own maintenance people do not follow the rules. 2. They pick and choose what parts of the lease they want to enforce. Property management will turn a blind eye to the countless dogs (who are clearly not service animals based on their unruliness) but would not hear me out when we had a NSF check. I understand that they need to get paid, but if these lease terms apply in one context then they should apply in all contexts. And if they want to allow dogs they should just change their policy and start charging dog owners pet rent like I was charged pet rent for my cats. 3. Building upon the last reason, they do nothing to enforce quiet hours or to ensure a generally peaceful living environment. I had neighbors playing loud music with the bass so high it would shake my apartment unit's walls. If you call to tell property management, they tell you there is nothing they can do and that you should call the police. So, if you do not want to be "that guy" and call the police on your neighbors, you are left with no solution. 4. Which brings me to my next point, the walls are paper thin. If people in the unit below you or above you speak in anything above a normal speaking voice you can hear their entire conversation. This can become really uncomfortable when your downstairs neighbor have loud domestic disputes. Also, it is not fun to hear ever footstep your upstairs neighbors make. 5. With the walls being paper thin, all smells from the hallway seep into your unit. This is annoying because I think people should be allowed to cook (or in the case of my neighbors smoke) whatever they want in their own home without worrying that it will cause my apartment to smell. Again when someone else in my apartment building complained about the smell of weed in the building, management recommended that people in the building call the police. I know that I did not want to call the police on my neighbors. If management could have just done something to ventilate the apartment hallway we all would have been fine. 6. With the exception of Jake (who is the only person I will name drop because it is in a positive way), everyone in the office seems fake. I still do not believe it was an accident that management left a 5-day notice of eviction proceedings instead of an NSF notice... I ran out of characters, so I will leave you with this: find somewhere else to live!"
