Reviews of Health Sciences High & Middle College
"As a parent whose children have attended more than 2 dozen schools, I have been very pleased by the efforts and dedication of the faculty/staff. There are many opportunities for students to create a meaningful experience based on their individual priorities and interests. There is a sense of collaboration and community that is not reflected in reviews that reference proximity to the freeway."
"This school is not for everyone. If your child needs more structure, then sending them to a traditional school would be more beneficial. I would say this school is for students who are independent, self-reliant, and are interested in the internships that they offer. I enjoyed the curriculum and was able to build interpersonal relationships with the educators. Having both of those, I would say I had a great high school experience. Thanks to the preparation that this school offered me, I graduated from undergrad in three years. I was then able to begin my grad program at the age of 21. I appreciate the time that the school invested in me by helping me fill out FAFSA forms, college applications, and more. Many people I know have said that their high school did not prepare them nor give them guidance on the steps to take after high school. I appreciate the time I had at hshmc."
"Health Sciences High & Middle College employee here. As a first year teacher all I can say is WOW! I feel like a valued member of the staff community. My co-teachers and staff are always willing to help. Students also see this school as a home-away-from-home which is very inspiring. All in all, I’m very impressed with HSHMC and I hope other educators get to see the magic this school creates."
"The school is okay, not the best. The education system there is very steady and packed, but it’s a bit comfortable yet the way the students, the staff, and the schools’ history all chose to be ignorant and foresee the racism implanted in the school, feel uncomfortable. With non black students saying racial slurs left and right, to staff hearing them and walking right past then. On some occasions, I’ve even heard a non black boy say the n word front of a teacher and she just stood there laughing with him, absolutely disgusting. The school also lacks proper knowledge in certain parts of history, like the hidden massacres that happened even after slavery was abolished to black culture and how that is being abused. Especially in a school full of Black indigenous people of color, our culture and history should be taught instead of white men making rules. What do we gain from that? As far as the college and high school education we get, that is probably the only pro at this school, especially the social justice and public health majors. DO BETTER!!!"
"When I started this school I thought it was cool and had a chance for great opportunities, however in a matter of a few weeks my opinion changed dramatically. I find this school terrible we lost many teachers in one year and they wouldn't tell us because they dont want to disrupt "peace". The line between professionalism and unprofessional is crossed many times by teachers and it is not addressed. Overall the idea of the school is great but the actual school not so much. That why I'm leaving."
