"I reached out to Jack Lieb regarding a lawsuit and he took my retainer but never provided any legal services. After taking the retainer fund he never even counter signed the retainer agreement nor returned a signed copy to enact the agreement, returned emails, or phone calls. His own contract states, “This Agreement will not take effect, and Attorney will have no obligation to provide legal services, until: (a) Client returns a signed copy of this Agreement; (b) Client pays the initial deposit called for under Paragraph 4; and (c) Attorney acknowledges acceptance of representation by counter-signing this Agreement and returning a fully executed copy to Client. Upon satisfaction of these conditions, this Agreement will be deemed to take effect.” After we returned the retainer to Lieb with our client signatures and sent him the retainer funds he then never signed nor returned a copy to us and we could not get him to responded to emails or phone calls. When I and my other attorneys tried to get in contact with him he never responded and due to deadlines we needed to get in touch with him to coordinate the legal defense. Since I did not hear back from him, I then formally informed him of the termination of his services, and then opened a dispute with my credit card company regarding the retainer funds. Lieb then just signed a copy of a retainer agreement, which he submitted as a copy that was also missing 1 client’s signature and dates, to just show he did sign it claiming it happened before the termination of his services to the credit card company. In his justification for charging me for work he claimed he included every email I had sent to him which he provided no response, emails from my other attorneys attempting to coordinate who would request the extension on the lawsuit response, and in total charged me $3K for every single email I sent to him with an arbitrary .2hr billing. Those emails would not have taken .2hrs to read and even if that is his minimum billing amount than sufficient time would have been left to respond via a returned email or a phone call; however, he simply abandoned a client and decided when he was terminated that he should charge as much as possible in order to keep the retainer funds that were entrusted to him. He even put in a charge for .3hrs for the termination of services email I sent him as the final billing transaction. The fact that his own advertisement states, "our attorneys charge you less so you can make more" is so contrary to his own behavior that I was a victim to witness. I truly wish I knew his character before engaging with him although on the initial phone call he was convincing. Wasting client funds for no apparent reason is not ethical. Abandoning a client and not responding is not ethical. I have already reported Jack Lieb and an active investigation of this unethical behavior and client abandonment has been opened with the State Bar of California with the Office of Chief Trial Counsel."
