Reviews of St. Columban School
"In my opinion, some of the teachers are not properly educating their students , and the principal had chosen the wrong major. From teachers close to retirement age, and some quitting or being fired by the principal. The teachers are to worried about their work skills that they don’t have time for the students, it may look like they try to put all their effort into teaching the kids. But deep inside of them after their close colleagues that have been fired or have been quitting their worries are overwhelming them instead. Following along, the principal may have chosen the wrong major. We all know she just wants money and she can negotiate well, but she can’t handle children well. She’s always in her office acting like she’s making the children’s educations better when it’s actually getting worse. Thinking of solutions to make fundraisers for the school, and setting up gala tickets that cost around $40. Wouldn’t that be a great thing to do when your building ure own company, instead of taking someone else’s and shredding it until the school corrupts. I’m done with this school, and I hope you choose wisely for your children’s education."
"St. Columban School is unpretentious, faith filled and community centered. The school boasts an academically rigorous program that includes a one-to-one iPad program beginning in the 3rd grade, “Maker Space” at lunch in which students learn to program robots or engineer their own trebuchet and every grade level is exposed to foreign language. As desirable as this may be, one can find the same programs at other schools. What sets St. Columban apart is the culture of the school. At St. Columban the idea of “bullying” is unheard of. The teachers create an atmosphere in which the students are encouraged to grow not only intellectually, but as individual sons and daughters of God. Due to the small class sizes, everyone in the school knows everyone else. Students aren’t “third graders” or “TK”—they are simply “Colts”—members of the same family. As a parent of a student diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, this has been key to daughter’s success. In any other school she would be “different,” a possible target, but at St. Columban she’s just Jane. At St. Columban she’s free to be the person God made her and what’s more, she’s is admired for it. Any school can educate the mind, St. Columban is a school that forms good people."
"I am going to be honest. I'll try not to let my opinions get it the way. This school has some good things, such as hands on activities, arts and crafts, and science camp, but so do all the other schools. It is average to the extent that all other schools are above it. The teachers here are awesome, but some teachers need more experience, and some people take discipline to the next level. Some of the younger grade teachers are too harsh, they treat them as they were 8 years older than they are. The irony is also in the older grades too, they are treated as little kids. Let's get back to the good things for now. Most teachers here are amazing! They know what they are doing, and how to perform it to a certain extent that it is the perfect way to teach their kids. They don't go 10 grades higher than they actually are. Some of that is a problem, at a young age, they are taught things they probably already learned. They are slow on the learning, and that is why many schools are ahead of this one. The higher grades can't do anything, because they haven't learned what the teachers are trying to teach them. Also, the worst factor about the school is, drumroll please, the principal! The principal is lazy, and money hungry. She canceled a trip for the 8th grade class, for a gala where they promised to renovate they shabby and broken down playground. Nope, surprise surprise, the playground is the same. Also, take note that the tickets costed 40 $ per person, the whole reason for the gala was to make the playground better, even though half the school can't even use it. The school is run down, and ever since the new principal came, we have missed out on a bunch of activities. Schools are going ahead of this one, like Saint Polycarp, and Christ Cathedral! Also, Murphy hall has just been renovated. Uh, where were you, two years ago? You know, the time it was supposed to be renovated. The school has made everyone less social, no more dances, just work, work, and work. If you miss out on your break, you won't get an extra 5 minutes of recess. Yet, people are still scolded for talking, and the excuse is 'You have a time to talk!' Also, you are forced to keep your little tush still on the benches for fifteen minutes at lunch, even though you have finished eating, and cleaning up. Though, you are scolded for not eating fast enough once the fifteen minutes are over, and you can't even stay if you don't have any food. You are forced to hurry up, and on rainy days, you can't bring out any equipment, or use any. Instead of staying inside, you are forced to stand outside awkwardly in the middle of multiple puddles. Speaking of equipment, many of the older grades are limited to just a few balls and a blacktop. They don't get to go in the field or playground unless we have P.e. Speaking of P.E, the majority of the time, the new P.E Teacher is sexist and favors the boys. Now nobody has the excuse that boys are treated worse than girls. When arguments arise from boys and girls, and majority votes don't count. To him, the group with the most boys win. So nearly every single P.E he makes us play every game the boys want. For weeks straight, we have been playing basketball, basketball, basketball. Speaking of the sports, the old P.E teacher was amazing. She was always prepared and taught everyone the fundamentals of each sport, instead of assuming we already have a decent amount of knowledge of the game. Putting us all on the tallest surfboards and diving right into the games. Principal break! We always know about our games, and events, but where is the principal in all of this? Probably home sleeping, unless it requires one of her recycled speeches. If you pay enough attention, she reuses her speeches, and not to mention they are, boring! She scolds the students for about everything, even though she probably can't see what they even did, and what is going on, sailing a boat made of her assumptions. She is always in her office, and doesn't even go out for recess. Everything she does is probably to fatten her wallet."
"The school staff seem very caring. They encourage parents to speak up if there is a problem with anything. I have spoken up and changes were immediately made. I have been allowed to sit and observe an after school class my child was to participate in with no problem. I feel my child is very safe when I leave her here during school hours. This is my daughters first year coming here. I also like that her teacher gives plenty of homework and encourages her students to study. Not sure if my child will be attending this school next year, I will have to see how the rest of school year goes. Also unsure why the school has a high turnover rate for their teachers which is concerning to me."
