"Our family is overjoyed to have discovered Bethel Classical Academy for our two children. We wanted a school that would confirm the Christian values we practice in our home, that would keep the students away from screens, social media and dopamine-stimulating content (as we do at home) and that would engage the children’s minds in discovering and describing the beauty of God’s Creation in science, literature, and the arts. Our children started out in Montessori. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and researcher turned educator, recognized in children an innate desire to learn and incredible ability to focus if not distracted. Although not a Montessori school, BCA leverages this innate desire to allow students to learn. BCA also does not allow smartphones, which also minimizes the distraction and drama of social media, games, etc. You might ask “What is Classical Education?”. Picture a one-room schoolhouse from the last century; the students reciting their lessons from memory. That is how one of our daughter’s classes starts: the students work together memorizing catechism, scripture, and poetry for 30 minutes at the start of each day. This isn’t a big chore: they do it together and it is normalized. They are challenged; the bar is set high, but they are eager to meet the challenge. They know their class will recite their lesson together in chapel at the end of the week and look forward to their recitation. My 2nd grader brought home a math assignment that contained two equations with two unknowns. The “unknowns” were two diamonds and a square; not x and y, but this was quite rigorous from my perspective. My wife and I find ourselves wishing we’d had access to this type of education when we were their ages. I mentioned “normalization”. There are values that are “normalized” in public, and, for that matter, other private and even parochial schools that are at odds with our personal values. We could not in good conscience; as God’s stewards for our children’s lives and souls, expose them to the world’s “values”, especially at such an impressionable age.
