Reviews of Sunshine Supper
"Great food. Friendly people."
"Best meal in town on a Monday night that I can share with my friends in the best city in world."
"Good food. Good talking with people. Service is great"
"The announcers who call the numbers out are constantly trying to do comedy bits or singing or scolding the people to stop talking while they tell us who's turn it is to eat on the loudspeaker. If you're starving to death then it's great I'm sure but if you think you will have a nice relaxed meal you will see it's about as much fun as a soup kitchen where most of the homeless are seniors. They let kids in unaccompanied by adults and people lie about when their birthday is in order to get a free cake. I suspect at least some of the food is from the pantry next door where Ive seen many many expired items so expired that I've opened a can of beans that had turned to rot since it was 9 years overdue. When I tried to volunteer at the pantry part I saw employees hoarding the best foods and once a "higher up" person there made a comment about an expired product saying "just put it with the others, these people will eat anything". That was my last day volunteering anywhere ever again. Once when I signed up for the Thanksgiving turkey a few years back I didn't get my turkey voucher until mid January for some reason so I had no turkey for the holiday. I tried to tell them what happened and got a very bad attitude from the woman I spoke to as if I were trying to scam a turkey from them. I think the pantry part is called the emergency food pantry and some of the people are so judgemental they cop attitude when I go there as if I should be capable to steal my supper instead or something. I've walked out of the sunshine supper with a migraine from the announcer being way too boisterous and as far as the pantry, it will truly be a crisis before I ever ask them for anything. In fact I'll probably just not eat until they get some more pleasant people in there who are happy to help as opposed to some bitter person who acts like she's giving away her own personal pantry items. I hate having to gripe about something like this but it is the attitude of the pantry leadership and for the supper it's very stressful trying to eat when there's some lady singing terribly and walking around the tables putting hats on people's heads and not leaving a moment of silence or a chance to talk to your neighbors. Oh and then the hats are collected and next song they go on other heads. Just go to the grocery store and cook at home is my advice. Even if all you have is rock soup. Or nothing at all."
"This free community meal is served by volunteers. Meals are provided by local establishments or by the volunteers themselves. The menu changes every week. The thing I enjoy most about being here is the split volunteer shifts. Half the time you perform your volunteer service. The other half you spend time eating with the other guests. Typically they serve about 160 people. Meals start at 5:30."
