Reviews of Burke Apartments
"Lived there from 2013until May 2022, safe place, they fix what's broken pretty easily, never had a problem with the hot water, but my apt stayed pretty hot. Shower is made for wheel chairs. It's close to groceries, Walgreens amd a mall."
"Lived here from 2013-2014. Newer building. Nice location. Road noise is not too bad. Located in probably one of the lowest crime areas in Duluth. The hot water heater didn't have enough capacity for whole building in the mornings. There is a large, clean laundry room on the first floor with three washers and dryers, a utility sink, a large folding table, and some wheeled laundry carts. There is a small lobby area and a large community room on the first floor. Each apartment has a large wheelchair-accessible shower with a ceiling-mounted heat lamp in bathroom, but my ventilation fan was under-powered so it would get quite steamy if I didn't leave the bathroom door open. There is under-counter space for wheelchair accessibility in the kitchen area and bathroom, which unfortunately left less than adequate space for storage. There is a hood with a fan over the stove, but it didn't actually vent to anywhere except right back into the apartment. In my one-bedroom apartment there was a medium-sized coat closet, a small storage closet, and a large bedroom closet. There is a lack of adequate noise insulation if you have a noisy upstairs neighbor - thankfully I didn't. The heating system is was not adequate to keep your windows free of condensation, frost and mildew on cold winter days. You have a thermostat in your apartment for heat and air conditioning, but the maintenance guy needs to turn on the heat in winter and the A/C on in spring, so if the weather is too hot on early spring days or too cold on early fall days you're out of luck. When I lived here the maintenance person worked at multiple locations and wasn't given the support he needed from main office - he was competent and a great guy, but he was mostly used to act as a policeman for the bad tenants at the other Accessible Space properties, and wasn't given enough support for keeping our building as nice as it could have been. When I first moved in I noticed a nasty smell in my apartment. The previous tenant had had a dog that peed all over the carpet. When I called the main office the manager acted like I was making it up or that it was my fault. The maintenance guy (who was brand new to the job) checked it out and had the whole carpet replaced like it should have been (it had only been shampooed), and eventually that office manager was fired for her poor behavior - from listening to the other residents stories she apparently had a history of treating renters badly. You should definitely have a car or someone to give you a ride if you live here - the nearby bus stop only has service a couple of times a day and there are no sidewalks to local businesses. Stone Ridge Shopping Center looks close on a map, but there's a fence and a steep, slippery rock hill/cliff most of the way around it that's a workout to navigate in the summer and unclimbable in the winter. When I lived here almost all of the tenants were female - mostly older women, and there was little drama besides the usual gossip, and no alcoholics, drug users or violent or abnormally unstable people. Most everyone was polite, if not helpful, to each other. Even though there's room for improvement, this is probably one of the best low-income apartment buildings in Duluth."
