Reviews of Broken Paddle Guiding Company
"Had this been marketed differently, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Our group of four took the Flooded Forest 3.5 hour tour for my birthday. The description of the tour and corresponding “tour basics” email confirmation held many mistruths. 1. The photo on their webpage makes it seem like you’ll be kayaking through a canopied sunken forest. While the kayaking was beautiful, the reality is there is no tree canopy and it’s a gorgeous inlet. Again, beautiful, but not what was expected. Also about 1/3 of the trip was on wide Mississippi channels with speedboats and riverboats, which meant faster waters and navigating the waves resulting from their wakes. 2. The tour description and tour basics page says “All Broken Paddle guides are trained outdoor educators with long educational careers in natural history, experiential teaching, and local history.” The website says they love teaching about the ecosystem. We did not find this to be the case and was the most disappointing. Our tour guide was in their first semester of college and, aside from pointing out the raspberry color of milkweed and a few turtles, there was no education or mention of our surroundings. The guide was pleasant and kind, but not an “educator with a long educational career in natural history”. 3. The “tour basics” page you receive after registering gives you a list of things they’ll provide and a list of things you should bring. Among the list of things provided were sunscreen, bug spray, and a snack. When we arrived, I asked about the sunscreen and bug spray because I hadn’t packed any based on the website info. The people checking us in said they don’t provide that, but we were welcome to purchase those items (of course at much higher prices than what you’d pay in a store). I reminded them that their webpage states it’s provided and they became quite rude. Also, there will not be a snack provided, so definitely pack your own. Your guide will, however, eat a snack at the stop you’ll make. Again, I think if this were marketed as a kayaking trip where you could enjoy the peaceful silence and had different photos, along with correct information about what was provided, I would have had different expectations and rated it much more highly."
"Incredible trip! Knowledgeable guide! Actually made sure we were on the water for sunset! As a senior, I appreciated the extra help getting in and out of the kayak! Could not have had a better experience! Highly recommend!"
"The flooded forest tour far exceeded our expectations. Our small group has already been discussing doing the same flooded forest tour during different seasons in order to experience the river during different conditions, but we all agree we would be completely happy doing the same tour during the same season as well. Although we have some experience kayaking on lakes our kayaking experience on rivers was fairly limited, but that did not impact our trip at all. When first meeting at Broken Paddle storefront any worries or concerns were immediately put to rest as we encountered the perfect energy and attitude from our guide Laura and the other workers at Broken Paddle. Laura, our guide was the absolute perfect guide for our group. She was knowledgeable about the river, plant and animal life and the outdoors in general. She had a perfect energy and vibe for our group of 4. We lost track of the amount of eagles we saw along the trip and even paddled directly underneath a number of them as they watched us go by. Thank you Broken Paddle and specifically Laura for an amazing July Saturday on the river. We made family memories that will last a lifetime."
"One of best days we’ve ever had in a kayak. Had such great time on the morning Flooded Forest trip, we booked the Sunset/Brewery trip as soon as we got back to the store! Finnegan was absolutely one of the best guides we’ve ever had. Knowledgeable on the local area history and all the wildlife we encountered on the trip. After a short time on the water it felt like we were paddling with someone we had known for years! Thanks for the awesome day Finnegan!!!"
"Absolutely gorgeous experience! I've had so much fun paddling through the amazing Mississippi river area. The waters were very calm and beginners friendly, but still very diverse. My guide Drew made sure I had an awesome experience, keeping me safe, and he gave me a lot of insight into the local plant and animal life. I would definitely come back for another tour. Highly recommend."
