"We used SVM previously to move from a 1br w/ garage to a storage unit, and initially thought they were fine, but expensive. One of the 3-man crew was extremely motivated and skilled. They were all polite. It took them 9.5 hours to complete the move, including their 2x rate for drive time. They packed the kitchen and wrapped furniture, but 90% of the rest of our stuff was already in boxes when they arrived. At $210/hr for their cash “discount,” that’s $2k, before tip, for limited packing and to move a 1 bedroom + garage 4 miles. In spite of the high price, we rebooked them to move out of the storage unit into our new place since they were familiar with the load and we knew their truck would fit in the storage unit facility. Booked services in advance for a Monday at 8:00 AM, and received a call shortly before that time letting us know they could not accommodate the move due to a problem in their truck fleet. Unfortunate, but understandable - these things happen. Rescheduled for the next day at the same time. Received a call Monday evening telling me they could not make the new Tues. time and hoped to be able to start between 10:00-12:00, and would call with a 1 hour notice. They were unable to make this time window, and did not call. I contacted them to ask to push back to the following day, which they agreed to, but two different staff provided conflicting information about the Wed. start time, so I canceled to avoid further delays and headaches. Called around after canceling and found rates from half a dozen places ranging from $140 to 170/hr for a crew of 3 and none of them charged 2x for drive time, which SVM’s explained was industry standard. The company we hired ended up taking 3.5 hours to complete the move and assemble some of our furniture. Slightly less work overall than on the other end of the move, but less than half the total time, and they were going UP the stairs, not down. SVM’s were just inefficient and sloppy in comparison. Upon unpacking the items packed by SVM’s, we were pretty displeased. Some examples: two computer monitors were wrapped in moving blankets with no protection and the display was cracked on one as a result. Multiple boxes contain only some but not all parts of disassembled lamps and other multi-piece items. The couple pieces of furniture they disassembled are both missing critical hardware. This makes unpacking more of a headache than it already is. Boxes packed past their volume were crudely taped and stacked, which resulted in several additional damaged items. Alas - live and learn."
