Reviews of Fun With Mandarin Preschool and Daycare
"Our 2-year old has been attending FWM for the past 7 months and although the transition was difficult at first (this was the first time my son was being cared for by anyone other than us), he quickly acclimated in less than a month. I also appreciate that the daycare staff keeps me informed of my child's progress and any concerns they may have. They are always willing to work with me to ensure that my child's needs are being met. I completely trust that my son is being well cared for at FWM."
"We enrolled our daughter at FWM in December 2020 during the height of the pandemic. We specifically chose this school due to the Mandarin immersion component and the extra precautions that took place. FWM exceeded all of our expectations. Our daughter is exposed to English and Cantonese at home and in just a matter of months, she started speaking Mandarin at home- fluently, too! Aside from language, our daughter's overall development flourished under Lei Liaoshi, Ouyang Liaoshi and Ben Liaoshi’s care. Our daughter recently graduated from the younger group and has seamlessly transitioned into Chen Liaoshi and Ren Liaoshi’s class. Most importantly, my daughter has fun, eats well and naps well while in a safe and loving environment. FWM provides a structured environment with art work, circle time and outdoor play. My daughter proudly shows off her daily art work at pick up. 2 snacks and a homemade lunch is provided which is helpful for working parents! Newsletters are provided to inform parents of upcoming curriculum and thoughtful themes. My daughter’s favorite themes are Chinese New Year (lion dance, making tong yuan), and Halloween and dinosaurs (she still sings the song in Mandarin to this day)! FWM uses Brightwheel to communicate with messages, daily reports, food intake, diaper changes and pictures. FWM has a huge bright indoor space and an expansive outdoor space with play structures. We are so grateful to have found FWM as they have truly been a huge part of our village. Bin Bin Liaoshi and Liaoshi Ben genuinely care about each child’s health, well-being and development. As parents to young children themselves, it is evident that creating a safe space while helping children achieve a solid foundation is their passion. We are always amazed at the thoughtful arts and crafts, science projects, songs and overall stimulation children receive at FWM. We highly recommend FWM not only for the Mandarin immersion component, but also for a comprehensive and nurturing environment!"
"We have now been with FWM for about 3 years. We loved Fun With Mandarin before in their Holloway location, but the new school building is amazing. The space is huge and very well designed. It is clear that Bin Bin put a lot of care and attention to detail towards creating it. The classrooms are bright with sunlight, with many sectioned areas providing activities to explore art, science, play or reading. The furniture and facilities are excellent quality and beautiful. I love the child sized couches in the reading nooks. The yard area has plenty of space for recreational activities and has a really nice playground set. My kids, now 3 and 5 years old, love "the new school." Bin Bin also has utilized a new app through which I get live updates on when the kids eat, potty and nap. At the end of the day there is a whole album of photos taken throughout the day posted. Teacher Bin Bin greets us every morning and afternoon at pick up and gives a full report on how their day went. The kids always go home with all sorts of creative art projects. Bin Bin and all the teachers are really sweet and loving, and I feel at ease that my kids are well cared for. They love the food, which is also a relief since my daughter is super picky. I am also impressed with Bin Bin Lao Shi's really detailed newsletters about all the themes the kids cover, the new vocabulary words they learn ( I find that I'm learning more Mandarin myself from the newsletters), the songs they learn to sing, and quotes from all the kids in the class. My kids' Mandarin has improved by leaps and bounds, and the teachers have fostered their love of learning it. The cutest thing is when the two of them randomly break out into a Chinese song together. My son just passed the SFUSD language assessment with full marks, thanks to the teachers' careful preparation. He went into the assessment completely comfortable and confident. When trying to consider elementary schools for my son, he adamantly wanted to join a dual language program. I think this really speaks to the educational philosophy of Fun with Mandarin and its fostering of love for learning. She has also been very good about notifying us about the procedures for applying to elementary school, and follows up to see if we have questions, and to make sure we know all the necessary requirements. My daughter also loves the school, and on days when she is feeling ill, she practically has a meltdown when told she has to stay home from school. Regarding behaviors such as meltdowns, I have been impressed with how well Bin Bin socializes the kids, and disciplines them in a loving, gentle, and firm way. Regarding covid, they had quickly created clear and safe Covid 19 policies, requiring kids to have temperature checks, wear masks, creating plans for pickup procedures to minimize contact. I have felt that my kids are as safe as they possibly could be. Fun with Mandarin is clearly a labor of love for Bin Bin, who was previously a Presidio Knolls teacher. I am continuously impressed with how talented she is at teaching, her boundless and positive energy, attention to detail and dedication to the kids. We feel very lucky that our kids are able to have such an experience."
"Our daughter has been going to FWM for over a year now (from 2 years old) and I can't say enough wonderful things about them. We originally chose FWM because they accept younger children and our daughter missed the age cutoff for our older child's school (Presidio Knolls School). It soon became obvious that our daughter was having the same, and often better experience than our son had at PKS -- both in terms of language development and one-on-one teacher time. Now, we have no urgent plans to move her over. There are many benefits to FWM compared to other schools that we investigated: 1) you get year round schooling by a team of teachers that truly care about the children, 2) home cooked meals, 3) 100% immersion vs 80% at PKS and others. The teachers and staff were very caring and effective at helping our daughter with initial separation anxiety. Now our daughter looks forward to seeing her teachers and friends every day. We are in regular communication with Binbin (text messages / email) and they send us pictures of the school day. We spend time every evening looking through the pictures with our daughter and asking her about her day. Our daughter loves the nutritious food FWM provides. She is a picky eater at home, but we are told that she is one of the best eaters at school -- who knows :-). Their educational program is solid; it's very similar to what we see at PKS, but they have an even better teacher to student ratio. I know a few families with kids at both schools and they all feel the same. It's wonderful. In terms of language development, neither me nor my partner are Mandarin speakers, but our daughter’s language development has been incredible. It’s so sweet to hear her say words and phrases in Mandarin around the house, and have her tell us “this is what my teachers say.” She also has a lot of fun learning new words with her older brother. Did I mention our daughter loves Binbin and the teachers too? Yep, this is a great school."
"Our son has been enrolled part time at FWM for the past 2.5 years, and we are very glad and fortunate to have been part of the FWM community. We initially stumbled upon FWM after looking for Mandarin immersion care, and FWM has exceeded our expectations and then some. It is amazing how much our son has developed and flourished under Binbin and the other teachers, and we are sad that he will be graduating soon. There are too many positive things to list in a yelp review, but a few things have stood out to us over the past couple of years: - Well thought out lesson plans and teaching style Binbin and the other teachers have created a curriculum that simply works. Mandarin is part of life at FWM, and not simply taught as a class. The teachers integrate the language into everyday activities (such as going shopping for groceries, making lunch together) and fosters an environment that is truly immersive. We are a split language household at home (I speak English, my husband speaks Mandarin to our son), and our son's Mandarin skills has developed alongside his English skills. - Personalized attention and sense of community Many reviews have mentioned how much Binbin cares about her students, and I want to echo that sentiment. She not only cares, but she also knows how to create a community that goes beyond just learning. Our son was initially a bit shy and hesitant about going to school, but Binbin and the other teachers knew how to overcome that hesitation and engage with him. Despite attending part time, our son now loves going to school and playing with his friends. Pre-COVID, the community there extended into regular playdates, birthday parties, and extracirricular activities with FWM classmates. - Constant communication with parents to make sure there is a cohesive growth plan When we first joined FWM, Binbin made the point that she started FWM because she couldn't find a daycare that she would want to send her own kids to. As a parent herself, she understands what other parents are going through and our concerns. After every school day, Binbin conducts a short debrief at pickup, during which she summarizes the day and what we can do to reinforce the day's teachings at home. For example, when our son had some behavioral issues, she highlighted what was done at school and how we can be consistent at home to make sure our son had consistent messaging."
