YOU are clearly a civilian and know NOTHING about the history of this training vessel; maybe you shouldn't be able to comment on a topic you know nothing about! This is the tear gas training portion of boot camp. They used to do drills on placing the mask on your face, how to navigate in the dark, in a crowded room, and when the tear gas is turned on full strength. They were forced to take off their masks and open their eyes while the tear gas was on. Many of the men vomited and some passed out. Boot camp is no party. They separate the 17 yr old (that the youngest your parents can sign you in)''' boys from the men. Not all of them make it. It's a process of elimination. Shellbacks survive!!"

"USS RECRUIT is place to stop by and see the history. Located in Liberty Station on the south end of the base. We went on a weekend and they opened up the bottom for you to go inside. You have to sign a waiver (which doesn't make sense) you're only in one room. You don't climb any stairs and you only get to see through two hatches. Only open on weekends. It's great to see and read about the history of USS Recruit. For only being 2/3 scale it's still pretty big. It's not busy, but has great photo opportunities. Enjoy"
