"I am currently staying here at the Hawthorne Historic Inn and have been for almost two months. I figured I would leave my review of this place to highlight my experience and the reason I give the stay 5 stars. #1. Walkability - Located in between Bankers Hill and Little Italy, almost everything is walking distance. You have Balboa Park, Downtown, Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, and more, all within a 1 mile walk. #2. Unique and as Described - This is a historic inn that was built in what I believe to be ~1900. With that being said, there is a nice historic vibe to this Inn and for those coming from other areas across the country, it makes you feel right at home. The rooms are also very clean - you won't find any unwanted pests. In my experience, mages shown online are accurate to what I arrived to see. #3. No Nonsense - You pay your rent and go about your business. There is not a bunch of hounding and you aren't getting a ton of spam emails/texts. The property manager, Greg, is a good guy and is responsive. #4. Airplanes - For those who are fascinated by airplanes, you are directly beneath the flight path and this makes this location great for watching them fly in to SD. I've also never once woken up from the sound of them flying by, so no complaints there. Additionally, if you are walking downtown and get lost. It's easy to find your way home by looking in the sky and walking until your beneath the flight path."
"Amazing place to be. Pet friendly. The owners are amazing people. We were there for 7 months with our big dog and two cats. I can't think of a better place to stay. If you are moving to SD, or are here to visit, you can't possibly find a better place to stay."
"The owner, Stephen Parker (the same one that left a review below) is extremely abrasive, talks down to guests, and has an issue with threatening and harassing guests/tenants. Inappropriate comments, suggestive comments, stares, glares, and lurking around the block in his car. He has even gone so far as berating a guest and banging on their door to continue after they tried to get away from him. I've personally experienced some of these, and witnessed what I have not suffered. Save yourself the trauma and steer clear."
"Used to live in here in 2012 I believe it was....used to rent a studio with electricity included and basic cable for 750$ a month (and I thought that too high at that time HAH if only I knew how rents would blow up in the years to come). The place was owned by Bob and Jitka, a married couple. Bob was at the property every day, working on the place while Jitka did the housekeeping every day....I have nothing but good memories living here while I went to San Diego City College..it was a small space with no AC, but it was my own and I loved it....and you can't beat the area...the airplane noise was a huge adjustment but you do get used to it....and they quiet down after 10:30 pm as they fly a different direction after hours and not overhead....Bob and Jitka really made this place feel like home and were special landlords...."
"We stayed several pleasant weeks at the Hawthorne House. The owners, Michelle and Stephen, as well as manager Greg were more than helpful with whatever we needed. We had an issue with noise from another tenant but it was taken care of. Having one of their parking spaces reserved for us was great. Gradual improvements and upgrading are being done to make the Hawthorne even better. As others have mentioned, Hawthorne is under the flight path of the San Diego airport and you know it when planes go over. However the building has been retrofitted for sound insulation which made the brief roar tolerable. The Hawthorne is in a choice location not far from restaurants, downtown and other San Diego attractions."
