About the Robinson Rose House
The Robinson Rose House, located at 4098 Mason Street in San Diego, California, is a historical institution with a rich past. Originally built in 1853 by James W. Robinson, a prominent figure in the town's development, the house served as a residence and law office. Over the years, it has been used for various purposes including as a jail cell, schoolroom, newspaper office, store, and County Clerk's office.
In 1868, the property was sold to Louis Rose, a German Jewish entrepreneur, who continued to maintain the building's historical significance. Despite being demolished around 1900, the house was reconstructed by California State Parks in 1989 and now serves as a visitor information center. The center includes a diorama of Old Town San Diego as it would have appeared in 1872, providing visitors with a glimpse into the past.
With its unique history and architecture, the Robinson Rose House is a must-visit destination for those interested in the heritage of San Diego.

Reviews of Robinson Rose House
"Located in Old Town San Diego, the Robinson Rose House is a replica of the original building that was on the site. The original was built in 1853. The replica now serves as the visitors' center and park headquarters for Old Town. Additionally, it houses a very detailed model of Old Town. The house was built in 1853 by James Robinson who used the building as both his residence and to house several offices. Robinson died in 1857 and the residence was sold by his wife to Louis Rose. Fire destroyed the roof in 1874 and the house slowly deteriorated afterwards. The reconstructed building is what sits there now. The house supposedly has problems with the electricity as lights will go on and off by themselves. Footsteps have been heard upstairs at night and a man has been seen at the upstairs windows. There have also been reports of women having their hair mysteriously pulled or touched."
"Great building. Nice staff with lots of good information."
"Love the old style buildings here in old town. Old Town in San Diego is a must place to go."
