About the Business
The Craftsmanship Museum, located at 3190 Lionshead Avenue in Carlsbad, California, is a unique institution showcasing the finest examples of miniature engineering and craftsmanship. One of the standout exhibits is a working 1/6 scale model of a Holbrook Model C lathe, which took a dedicated individual a lifetime to complete and has won numerous awards. Visitors can also admire meticulously crafted models of a P-51 Mustang and two F4U Corsair planes, each built with incredible attention to detail using aluminum and brass.
The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM, and admission is free (though donations are gratefully accepted). One of the highlights on display is Louis Chenot's superb 1/6 scale Gar Wood Runabout with a Liberty V-12 engine. Visitors can also marvel at Geoff Kidd's scratch-built model M1857 12-pounder Napoleon gun with limber and caisson.
The Craftsmanship Museum welcomes a variety of visitors, from Model A and Model T clubs to woodworking associations and car clubs. Students from different schools also come for tours to appreciate the exceptional craftsmanship on display. Presented by The Joe Martin Foundation for Exceptional Craftsmanship, the Craftsmanship Museum is a must-visit destination for enthusiasts of intricate and detailed miniature engineering.

"Incredible collection of some of the finest miniature homes, aircraft, ships, engines, etc. anywhere in the world! Plan on spending a couple of hours here. The docents are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They do have demonstrations periodically. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here and plan to return in the future. A great visit for ALL ages. A small gift shop is on site, too. Free to visit but they do appreciate donations. Do yourself and your budding engineer a huge favor by stopping here. Plenty of parking as well as handicap friendly."
"This is a wonderful gem of a place in Carlsbad. Many models are working models. The details are amazing. It is definitely worth a visit."
"Fantastic. What an amazing display of models. The 2 gentlemen were awesome. We will go back the next time we're in San Diego."
"Super cool place. Hard to believe the dedication it took to create these models. Make sure to wear a pocket protector:)"
"If we could give them 10 stars, we would. A jaw-dropping museum of astonishing builds. The passion and artistry are hard to comprehend, as we don't have any of this skill or capability, and so we greatly admired all that was there. The docents are friendly, informative, talented, and this was the highlight of our Carlsbad trip. They should charge for entry, as we could have spent delightful hours in there, admiring all the miniatures, and seeing them function. A tiny car which ACTUALLY has a gas engine in it??? HOLY COW! Wish we lived closer so we could go back again, and we have a ton of family and friends back in MI/MN who would love to visit this place. Thank you for existing, and for sharing this delight with the public! :)"
