IRWD San Joaquin Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary
About the Business
The IRWD San Joaquin Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is a peaceful oasis nestled in the bustling Orange County, California. Covering over 300 acres of coastal freshwater wetlands, this sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers. With half of the wetlands restored to their natural state and 12 miles of scenic walking trails, it is a popular destination for those seeking a serene escape from city life.
Visitors to the sanctuary can observe over 200 bird species, take leisurely walks along the trails, or simply relax and enjoy the sounds of nature under the shade of native willow trees. As a wildlife sanctuary, the marsh is a protected area where vehicles, bicycles, drones, dogs, and other animals are not allowed to ensure the well-being of the plants and animals that inhabit the area.
The wetlands also play a crucial role in IRWD's Natural Treatment System, naturally filtering urban runoff and helping to protect the nearby Upper Newport Bay. Educational programs and tours are available for students, teachers, and the public, making the sanctuary a valuable resource for learning about local wildlife and conservation efforts.
Visitors are advised to take precautions against mosquitos, as they may be present in the area. Whether you're looking to explore nature, learn about wildlife, or simply unwind in a tranquil setting, the IRWD San Joaquin Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique and enriching experience for all who visit.

"This place plays an important role in purifying the water, but it also seems to provide peace of mind."
"It's really amazing to learn the 300 acer filter area is cleverly disguised as a nature preserve. Great for bird watching !! There are various easy walking loops which you can decide how further you would like to go. Definitely a beautiful place to enjoy the sunset, too."
"The variety of birds and the changing seasons are beautiful here. I've been coming a couple years. I love to go take pictures of the many birds in the marshes and the riverbed next to it. From raptors to lizards there is so much to see. Take the kids and print out the bird list with boxes to check what birds are seen. There are so many different species I really enjoy!"
"Nice to walk about peacefully and birdwatch. Seems to be a photography hot spot as I saw many people with big lenses and tripods walking about. I personally like walking in the back bay more thus far but I’m sure I’ll be back over here for another trek at some point. Plenty of parking and easily accessible which are positives for many."
"It was a calm park for birdwatching. Went around noon and saw few birds. The trail is well marked."
