"I true must see if you’re in the area, take in the wonder, architecture of The Mirlo Gate Lodge Tower, that was built in 1925 to house the gatekeeper of the Palos Verdes Estates. The limestone is so beautiful and a staple of the Olmsted family’s work. If your no familiar with that good the name and you will see why this treasure is a must see. It was inspired by architect Clarence E. Howard's study of ancient stone masonry in France. Its design is closely modeled after the tower-shaped, stone pigeonnier/dovecote towers found in parts of France; Howard likely saw these on his travels through France after the First World War 2. The Mirlo Gate Lodge Tower is considered part of the “original landscaping” of the Palos Verdes Project1 which was under the direction of the prestigious landscape architecture firm, the Olmsted Brothers. The architect, Clarence E. Howard, who was employed by the Olmsted Brothers, designed many beginning commercial and residential buildings for the Palos Verdes Project, specifically ones targeting potential, future residents, including the Palos Verdes Estates Golf Clubhouse and the Palos Verdes Estates Riding Academy. Note: The family is best known for designing Central Park in New York City and the Boston and Buffalo park systems, but the Olmsted Brothers firm also worked in Seattle for 38 years."
