Reviews of Yerba Buena Lighthouse
"In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, I would spend weekends on these grounds. The property is owned by the US Coast Guard and the residence (maybe a weekend home or something) above the lighthouse was for the USCG Admiral. My father was in the CG and was a chef/caretaker for the house. He lived in the barracks and in this home for periods at a time, so he had his own quarters within the house. It had a beautiful garden, koi pond and patio outside, tucked under the trees. My sister and I used to spend summer afternoons observing the koi and going down to the lighthouse area for the beautiful view across the water. I think there may even have been a small pier as well. We would throw a football in the backyard, right above the lighthouse- alternating between being Jerry Rice and Joe Montana. We would always be terrified if we accidentally missed a catch and the football would roll all the way down to the lighthouse and fall right off the cliff. The entire exterior was maintained by a gardener, as the grass was always kept trimmed and the gardens were wonderful. The residence inside was stunning. My father wouldn’t allow us to go up to the bedrooms upstairs, so we mostly just got to see the kitchen and living room while he worked. I recall ample sunshine in the living room, windows on both sides brightening the main rooms downstairs, with nautical decor being the main theme. It was exquisite, light and felt very much like a luxurious hotel. I was a kid, so I didn’t quite grasp the honor it was to be there. Only other high ranking Coast Guard officials or the Admirals’s guests were likely to ever set foot inside the home. Yet here, my sister and I were able to run around outside like it was our second home. My dad would prepare us lunch and we would regularly snack out on the patio, soaking up the sun and enjoying the bay breeze. Wonderful memories and of this place."
