General Vallejo's Home
About the Business
General Vallejo's Home, also known as Lachryma Montis, is a must-visit tourist attraction located in Sonoma, California. This historic site was the estate of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the Military Commander and Director of Colonization of the Northern Frontier. The home is less than a mile west of Sonoma Plaza and showcases the furnishings of the Vallejo family, serene gardens, a reservoir, and a Visitor Center and Museum in the adjacent "Chalet." The Sonoma State Historic Park, where General Vallejo's Home is situated, consists of six midtown locations near the Plaza. Visitors can also explore other historical sites such as Mission San Francisco Solano, the Blue Wing Inn, Sonoma Barracks, the Toscano Hotel & Kitchen, and the Servants Quarters.
Dogs are allowed only in the historic zone and developed areas, but not in certain areas like trails, backcountry areas, historic buildings, and gardens. Free public parking is available behind the Sonoma Barracks, and public restrooms are located in the Sonoma Barracks Courtyard. The park offers a variety of events throughout the year, including music concerts, environmental programs, and campfire programs. Additionally, visitors can participate in guided tours and volunteer opportunities at Sonoma State Historic Park and Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park.

"Unexpected treasure of an oasis, free entry with a ticket from the nearby mission and vice verse. Turtles in the pond above the house caught me by surprise."
"I loved this historic place. Beautiful historic houses in a beautiful scenery. The front staff was welcoming. They explained some historic facts and gave us an overview of the place. I highly recommend walking from downtown to this tucked-in place to get a full sense of Sonoma’s history and landscape."
"This was an interesting history to see his home and learn the history of the general and his family. You can go inside the house and see the decorated rooms. Walk the grounds as you can see how the General had a natural spring that he made into the Sanoma first water company. There are other buildings on site to see also. The 3.00 is good to see three different attractions in the area."
"General Vallejo's home was absolutely stunning. It was left exactly the way they lived, and it felt warm and cozy. So much history here, he had a family of 16 children and most of them lived here at some point in time. You might not feel alone while touring this magnificent house, I think some of the family still are enjoying their home, while welcoming you in."
"Really enjoyed this historic home. Well laid out and a step back in time. You get to visit the home on your own and at your own pace. The grounds are lovely. The Chalet museum next door in worthwhile as well. All this for a $3.00 entry which also get you into Mission in downtown Sonoma. The house had a ton of woodpeckers flying about often pecking into the house. Absolutely worth a stop! There are vineyards across the street."
