Reviews of Angel Island Immigration Museum
"TLDR: two separate places one is the detention center that costs $5 but is more historic and the immigration museum which is free The immigration museum is a bit newer building and used to be the hospital for the detention center. The museum has some good exhibits on immigration and stories of past people and immigration. The detention center costs $5 and is more historic, with preserved Chinese carvings on the walls and an atmosphere more similar to what my ancestors would have seen in the past. Very informative and something to see if you’re on the island"
"I visited the museum today with a group of fifth and sixth grade students and we were led on a tour by Cynthia. It was by far the most informative tour I have ever been on, in any city or museum. The complex history of Angel Island was presented to our group in a clear, honest, and academic way. Cynthia knew the answer to every question we asked and was able to provide background knowledge as well as several nuanced perspectives. We all left feeling shocked and inspired, and grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the history of immigration in San Francisco."
"Great experience with this museum. Lots of recreated, informative rooms. I would recommend going with the tour guides."
"My grandparents came through here during the early parts of last century. After seeing what hardships and discrimination they faced by the local people and the government, I feel so lucky and honored by their sacrifices. I’m so glad I came to see and stand in the same buildings and rooms that they have traveled and suffered through. I wish more people would come and try to understand history is repeating itself again and we should not."
"the ticket costs $5, on the day we went to the museum they only accepted cash. a very amazing place filled with history and very sad stories, we enjoyed reading all the entries left here."
