About the Baxter's Hollow
Baxter's Hollow, located on Stones Pocket Road in North Freedom, Wisconsin, is The Nature Conservancy's largest preserve in the state. This park and tourist attraction is known for its deep forest and mountain-like creek, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. The area has a rich human history, with activities such as gold mining, saw mills, and maple syrup making taking place in the past. The unmarked trail in Baxter's Hollow is primitive and rocky, offering visitors a chance to see a variety of wildflowers, birds, and aquatic life along Otter Creek. The preserve is home to over 92 species of birds, including rare forest-dwelling birds like the cerulean warbler. Visitors are encouraged to stay on the trail to protect the habitat and to be prepared with good walking shoes, water, and bug spray. The Nature Conservancy has been acquiring parcels of land in the Baraboo Hills since the 1960s to protect this important bird and wildlife habitat. Additionally, efforts are being made to restore the oak forests in Baxter's Hollow to ensure the health of the ecosystem for years to come. Whether you're interested in birdwatching, hiking, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, Baxter's Hollow offers a unique and diverse experience for all who visit.

Reviews of Baxter's Hollow
"Baxter Hollow’s quiet woods have much to offer those seeking a more natural approach to hiking. Trails are minimally maintained, and are not paved or graveled. In many places, the trail disappears into the summer overgrowth and a hiker can find themselves exploring to relocate the path. There’s a single resting bench, room enough to seat two along the trail which I estimate is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from end to end. There are a few recently built wood bridges to aid in stream crossings, though some crossings are on wet and uneven rocks. Small yellow orange and red trail signs are nailed to trees to indicate the correct route. The southern entrance is extremely narrow for vehicular traffic and requires passing cars to drive through shrubbery and tree branches to get by. Parking at the south trail entrance is MINIMAL, easy to get blocked in and very difficult to turn around at times."
"Woods and water - wonderful. Took a beautiful autumn drive and short hike. Road gets pretty rough in spots as you get further in. Going slow is better for looking at trees, but keep an eye out for potholes too."
"Just an Amazing section of southern wisconsin forest with great trails, easy parking, and wildlife everywhere with otter creek running right through it all. Absolutely beautiful place that is never super busy and you can always find a spot to be alone. I've been there many times in my life and still find new little spots all the time. Just an absolute Jewel of Sauk county"
"If you are looking for a secluded hiking area with dense trees, this trail is for you. It is maintained well enough to make it from end to end but be prepared to walk through some overgrowth and over a couple downed trees. The surrounding area was lovely with constant forest. The river that runs through was a bit disappointing in late July - you could only hear the water - it was not high enough to get above the boulders. Insects were present so if you dislike bugs, be sure to bring the bug spray. You have two key options for parking when you visit here - the entrance via Stones Pocket Rd or the north lot via Forest Rd. The Stones Pocket Rd one was fine but could be a challenging parking scenario if there is any crowd. Overall, the trail is less traveled to so if you are looking for a unique spot, definetly consider Baxter's Hollow."
"Beautiful nature trail through the woods. Spent a little over two hours here. I recommend just parking in that first lot you see on the right rather than hoping the other lot further down is actually open."
