About the Larkin House
Larkin House is a historic institution located at 464 Calle Principal in Monterey, California. This tourist attraction is part of the Monterey State Historic Park, which showcases the rich history of the area under Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. military rule. Visitors can explore significant historic houses and buildings, including the Custom House and Pacific House, which are open for tours from Tuesday to Sunday. Guided walks are also available on Thursdays to Sundays, offering a glimpse into the past of this historic city.
The institution offers guided tours of the Larkin House and Robert Louis Stevenson House, where visitors can learn about the lives of American businessman Thomas Oliver Larkin and famous author Robert Louis Stevenson. The Stevenson House, an 1840s adobe, is filled with artifacts from Stevenson's life, while the Larkin House doubles as the American Consulate in the 1840s and is furnished with Larkin family furniture and art.
In addition to guided tours, visitors can explore the "Monterey Walking Path of History," a two-mile path that takes them through some of California's most historic homes, buildings, and gardens. The path includes the Custom House, the oldest government building in California, and other significant sites. Online reservations are not available for this park, so visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets at the Custom House or Pacific House museums.
For more information about the institution and its tours, visitors can contact the Pacific House Museum or the Park Unit Interpreter. The institution also has a non-profit Cooperating Association, the Monterey State Historic Park Association, which supports educational programs and preservation efforts throughout the park. By becoming a member of the association, visitors can help preserve the history of Monterey for future generations to enjoy.

Reviews of Larkin House
"When I was around 4,5,6, we lived on the ranch us kids played around our house the pasture we would play where there was a creek and dam I think the house was white if looking the barns the house on the left we went down a long drive way. Ya can see the hills I love that place.. great memories Karen Cole. . 1963 we left for Washington in ,64..thanks"
"This is one of the stops of the Monterey Path of History. On my visit, the gardens were open and they were beautiful. It is definitely worth the stop. I would like to add that I have attempted to visit several other times within the open hours listed on Google and found that they were not open. Also, there is no signage on the home itself in any of the windows that would indicate whether or not this home is available for touring. I do realize this information may be available somewhere online, but it would be nice for tourists and locals alike for more information to be available on-site. Otherwise, two random garden doors marked "entrance" can be quite confusing as once you are back there it almost feels as though you are somewhere you are not supposed to be."
"What a gorgeous spot in the heart of Monterey!"
"Very pleasant to be hanging around history. Larkin House and Sherman's Quarters offer a quiet garden with many benches. This small adobe was built in 1834 by Thomas Oliver Larkin and has changed little from its construction. In 1847, it was the quarters of Lieutenant William T. Sherman who was in charge of troops constructing a fort on the site of today's Presidio Military Reservation. Sherman would eventually achieve the rank of General in the American Civil War."
"Larkin house is a hidden treasure Garden of Solace and Silent Lucidity. At this time it's a good place reflect and enjoy by oneself or another. Places like this will make one's solitude and isolation feel like not only a need but a fulfillment."
