Reviews of Veranda La Jolla
"Response to the owner: Your words about seeking to improve are meaningless until you address your community director's awful outlook as well as your company policies' compliance with the law. I lived with your management for 5 months and had 4 separate issues all take over a month to resolve. The employees and bosses have changed. The irresponsibility has not. Ask your community director for my email if you want to reach out for more information. I have friends living at the place after recommending it under the previous management. I’m very interested in seeing how their move out goes. Update: I didn't get my full deposit check back until 3 months after I moved out. After 11 ignored phone calls/emails about it, they insulted me for “resorting to” coming in with a formal demand letter stating I’d sue if they didn’t fully return my wrongly deducted deposit as well as listing the four civil code statutes they were violating. That was finally enough for them to waive a bogus cleaning fee, though they insisted they wouldn’t change company policies to stop this from happening to other people. I lived here for 3.5 years and planned to give it 4 stars when I left, but the new management that took over in July 2023 is horrendous. They will ignore tenants’ rights. They will ignore the vast majority of your calls and emails about issues. They will lie to your face and tell you they’ll handle something by a certain day then fail to time and time again. They will make things up and hope you won't press the issue so they can steal from you. There’s a reason all the glowing reviews are people who recently moved in or those who just toured the place while all the awful reviews come from people whom have actually had to deal with management after move in. They know that they will drag their feet and try to avoid doing anything. My apartment flooded because of plumbing issues and they had me run dehumidifiers set to 95 degrees 16 hours a day for two weeks in the middle of Summer without putting me in a hotel. I didn't have a working shower the entire time. They never fixed the damaged carpet or severe water damage to the ceiling that I lived with for the last few months of my tenancy. They took almost six full weeks to approve the bare minimum concessions, during which time they told me they’d take care of processing the concession request ‘tomorrow’, ‘early next week’, etc 8 different times but always blew it off. A different person in the office finally confirmed the process had never even been started and took care of it in 15 minutes. Half the driers in the laundry room weren’t working for two months and continued not working even when they took down the ‘out of order’ signs. It’d tumble, but your clothes would come out soaked. They told us the online payment portal would be up before rent was due the first month they took over, but when it wasn’t up the day before rent was due, I had to go in to their office for them to tell me I needed to give them a check by the next day or they’d charge a late fee. This happened again next month. When it came time to move out, they didn’t provide written notice of our right as tenants to a pre-inspection before move out as required by law (California civil code 1950.5 section f 1), and were more than a half hour late to the appointment we made when I insisted. They said "they didn’t normally do" them. We cleaned the only two things the agent could find that weren’t spotless. They still charged me a $185 cleaning fee including an upcharge for leaving trash even though I have video showing the place is spotless. Meanwhile, they’re going to have to tear out the flooded carpet to replace it, repair severe water damage to the ceiling, and refinish one of the tubs. They literally mailed my check to their own front office instead of to me. In the four weeks since I first contacted them about the missing deposit check, they’ve ignored five phone calls and seven emails. I wouldn’t wish dealing with them on anyone. Don’t live here until they change management again."
"The leasing process was smooth, with the staff being incredibly helpful and responsive. The apartment itself is well-maintained with all the amenities promised. The community is friendly. Maintenance requests are handled promptly, and the leasing office is always available to assist. Overall, I highly recommend leasing at this property for a hassle-free and enjoyable living experience."
"Update 1.1.24 New year, same problems Wonder why they haven't replaced the cold air tumblers. The pool area is cluttered with depressing furniture that is honestly an overkill for the lack of visitors. Money is there. Just not being invested back. The dryers are on and off working, it's a gamble to know whether your clothes will be dried. Note there's 1 laundry room per building on the 1st floor out of the 4 floors. Update 12.11.23 The dryers have been fixed. 2 stars instead of 1. Emails are sent to us and communicated. The payment portal is up and looks good but difficult to sign up with. Can schedule reoccurring payments. Not luxury though especially for the price, that's still a false advertisement. Update 11.6.23 More than half the dryers have been out of service since August in building one. This is ridiculous. Luxury would imply extravagance. This isn't the case here. There's only one laundry room for one whole building and they can't replace that few machines promptly. La Scala was better. The new website for Veranda is confusing, it's convoluted and difficult to navigate the different apartments. There's 2 different bedroom types, now there isn't any differentiation between the two. Building 1, half the dryers in the laundry room in building one is out of service and some unevenly dries the clothes. I don't understand how that's considered luxury. Composting is supposed to be taken out twice weekly or at least weekly. It was weeks before it was disposed off and you couldn't walk near there without going through a swarm of flies. La Scala used to communicate with us through email or paper letters taped to the door/elevator very promptly. Now, it's been 2 weeks and they haven't communicated about a new resident portal to pay rent and request maintenance after calling and stating there would be one."
"My time living here has been such a pleasant experience. It is such a great location (especially for college students) since it is so close to everything and just a two minutes walk to the bus stop! The complex itself has everything you would need; a gym, pool & hot tub, and of course, a wonderful sense of community. Although moving in can be very hectic, Andy Freeburn made the entire process so much easier! Since moving in, he has been such a delight with whatever assistance we may need. He handles every situation with such promptness. If there is any issue, he is always right on it. He does a phenomenal job at ensuring all of his residents are well taken over and happy. If anyone is looking for a reasonable price apartment with great management team and community, I would highly recommend considering Veranda."
"I have been living here for a couple of months and have found it to be an enjoyable experience. The apartment has a wonderful view and the community is very friendly and nice. The apartments location is perfect because of being in the heart of La Jolla. Andy who is an office worker is extremely helpful when it comes to any questions regarding leasing, amenities, and any other questions related to veranda. He does a wonderful job of taking care of the community and is reliable with any questions regarding veranda. He is a nice and joyful man who works quickly to resolve any issues."
