Reviews of Common Macarthur
"The interiors are beautiful, and much bigger than they look online. The light is so good that my plants have never been this healthy. The art on the exterior is gorgeous. You can remove the blinds without damaging anything and put up your own. I've never had problems with noises carrying in from other apartments. The kitchen and bathroom appliances are new and high quality. Free unlimited street parking is ample. There is a major bus stop a 4 min walk away. It's a gated apartment complex and has cameras. The apartment is so warm in winter and cool in summer that not having air conditioning when I moved in in September wasn't inconvenient, and it took me till February to notice that the heating didn't work. The rent is so much cheaper than anywhere else that I plan live here permanently (I live frugally so I can donate more to charity). I've never heard of anyone else paying $900 per month for a large private room in the bay, let alone often with better appliances and aesthetics than the $1,500+ per month rooms my friends have. I realize that at this price the apartment complex can't afford to provide some things that many others do, and I'm just grateful that an apartment complex exists that prioritizes the cheap rent that I prioritize. People with different financial priorities may prefer to give this a pass. Here are the problems I've encountered in the 6 months I've been here. -The within-apartment walls are paper thin. Roommates can hear everything the others are saying in their rooms. -Maintenance is very bad. For example, we didn't have cleaning for 3 months and it took a month for them to fix one of our smoke detectors because they didn't make keys for the staff when they hired a contractor to replace the lock to the front door. It has also been about 3 weeks since I notified them about the heater and fixing it hasn't been scheduled. -Wifi was too slow for video calls sometimes. I considered upgrading my hotspot (and my roommate upgraded his), but I haven't had the problem for a couple months. - Apparently Wifi problems mean people briefly (like for much less than an hour) get locked out of their apartments (the locks are digital) but that hasn't happened to me (possibly because my apartment had a normal lock instead for ~3 months). We have a key card in addition to the app that unlocks the doors, so for all I know that fixes the problem. -You usually can't choose your roommates. Of the 3 I've had, 2 are wonderful, but one was a nightmare. -There are some miscellaneous problems like the dryer takes like 4 hours and 3 cycles on the delicate setting (but is fine on other settings), my closet door broke (I can drag it easily, it just doesn't slide anymore), there were a couple weeks when trash wasn't being taken out, and the front gate was stuck open for about a week. - The neighborhood is too dangerous for me to feel comfortable walking the 20 min to and from the BART station at night. -I had a package stolen. Package deliverers often can't find the locked package drop-off place, so they leave it at your door. I get my packages sent to the amazon locker at whole foods or a friend's place in a better neighborhood now."
"Please Be aware. If you are dealing with a terrible roommate and sign a lease, you will have to deal with that for the rest of your lease. Like others say, they take forever for other issues also as all things are done online. *Took two weeks for me to get my garage clicker, Still was paying for my parking (No parking is not free like someone said) *The dumpster was finally set out after two weeks and piling garbage. *There is maybe one Cleaning a month, though they did not come this month. I don't really care about the cleanings although: *My roommate is a disgusting junkie who has different people living here almost every day. I have been complaining gong almost 6 months now. Even after I caught his guest on camera stealing from me. They will not do anything. They gave him a "Violation" which doesn't mean anything honestly and they probably cannot evict him anyway if they wanted to. So here I am, stuck for the next 5 months waiting for the day my lease is up. Hating life, hoping one of these crack heads wont eat my food again. Like the other Person said, think twice before you sign a lease. As a matter of fact, make sure to do an In person tour and inspect everything too. The online tours they do not show you real time. I know its cheap rent but it wont be worth it. I guarantee."
"First off...NO COVID-19 protocol for moving new suitemates into your unit. They just moved someone who is sick into my unit with no notice. This new roommate is getting a covid test today. It would be nice to know ahead of time if someone is sick. They should be held liable if a covid outbreak occurs at Common Macarthur due to lack of/inferior protocols in place. As far as suitemates go, it's a game of Russian Roulette. You might get decent suitemates, chances are good you don't. Even one bad suitemate can create a hostile and tension filled living environment for everyone else in that unit. It's a game of musical chairs, people always moving in and out. I received notice on November 4th that the sick suitemate would be moving in on November 3rd. That should give you an indication of their customer service and communication. Varying rates of rent for each room, no consistency whatsoever. Some people pay more for the smallest rooms. I pay $1600/month for rent, the person directly above me pays $1100 for the same room. Nothing is done when you complain about noise, standard company line responses. I currently have a horde of wildebeests living above me. Walls and ceilings are thin, housecleaning is inconsistent at best with varying levels of cleanliness Inconsistent wifi speeds. Promises of free parking, never fulfilled. No help in subleasing your unit. If you decide to leave, they will force you to pay your remaining rent and then turn around and rent out the room to someone else. Basically double dipping. Let's be clear this is strictly a money making venture, the idea of community here is a false narrative they are selling in order to draw you in. Once they got you, you're trapped until your lease is over. The quality of tenant has dropped considerably since I moved in. I strongly urge you to look elsewhere for your housing needs. You've been warned."
"If I could give no stars I would. I decided to get a room rented for my internship in the Oakland area that start in a couple days. I had good rapport with the rental rep but after our initial conversation (that went incredibly well), there has been a complete void in communication and now I am scrambling to find housing because I put my trust in this facility to come through for me. The anger I possess over this lack of care will not accept an apology!!!! The main problem I have is that they don’t ever respond to emails. The only way of contacting them is through an answering service that is damn near not helpful and I’ve been told I’d be contacted but never was. Not even a voicemail or text. It’s a complete lack of responsibility and I’ll be reporting them to BBB… maybe I could finally get a response from the piss poor job they’ve been doing. For reference, I’m coming from the east coast so my only way to communicate with them is virtual. Also, my phone tends to block most calls and this is something I’ve been dealing with for a while so that has presented its challenges but my email is not ever blocked so what are the irrelevant excuses? I am trying my best to prioritize getting things sorted but they are just too incompetent to be bothered. I’ll take my business elsewhere. Damn shame that you’re told to do everything online or virtual and then can’t move forward because the online platform is less than smart to help me move forward."
"On balance, Common is a pretty rad company to rent from. 5/5 Pros: flexibility with the payments, cleanliness in Common areas, integration of digital and physical, membership rules for safety/comfort/community. Cons: digital presence mostly. Suggestion for improvement: on-site security and key/entry assistance because lockouts are a serious pain point that could always use improvement, tho it's impressive how well they handle this with open communication multi- channels."
