"On Saturday May 11, 2013 I was doing some last minute shopping at the above mentioned store. There were two checkout lines open when I was ready to pay. I went to the shortest line which had only one person in it. I was informed by Yolanda, the checkout clerk, that she was closed and I would need to go to the other line. As I was getting in the other line, a middle aged Caucasian man got in her line and she did not inform him that she was closed, rather, she proceed to check him out. I jokingly mentioned to the customer in front of me, "Wow, what is this, favoritism?" Then that customer asked the clerk, Yolanda, "Why did you take him? We have been standing here in line." Yolanda then motioned for her to come to her line. I then followed, but Yolanda told me that I would need to go back to the other line because she was closed. I then became very frustrated because she was now sending me away for the second time, yet had taken two other customers after turning me away. At this point in time, I'm starting to wonder why I'm not receiving the same customer service as these other two people. I am from the Philippines, but am mistaken most often as Hispanic, the first customer that received preferential treatment was a Caucasian man, and the other customer that spoke up regarding the Caucasian man was of African descent. Your employee is also of African descent. I then asked her if she was discriminating against me. She stated that she does not discriminate against anyone. I then told her that her actions show otherwise. She then said that she was supposed to be on break and would be fired if she took me. (That made no sense because she could have taken me in the first place since she took two other people after sending me away the first time.) I then told her that I was sorry, and she replied, “NO YOU ARE NOT!” I just ignored her statement and put my two items on the belt. Finally she rang me up. As I collected my items and told her that I hope that her day goes better. She also wished me well, but did not apologize. I was so upset that I had to compose myself in my car before driving away. I called the store while in the parking lot and spoke with the assistant manager in training and explained the whole ordeal. I left my telephone number with him, yet have not received a call to inform me of what the resolution has been. Today my husband called the store to ensure that this matter was taken care of. The manager that was on duty said that she was also working yesterday and counseled Yolanda. The manager was very apologetic. I have been shopping at that store for over 14 years and I have seen a major decrease in staff which has caused longer lines and a diminished quality of customer service. I hope that there will be some training and possibly an increase in staff to prevent this problem from happening to another customer."
"I guess this is the "poor" Safeway. The chain obviously doesnt care about this store or its shoppers. I only go in for last minute necessities"
