Reviews of Oakland Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine Clinic
"To Summarize: As a relatively new and entrepreneurial business I was fine with them making some billing mistakes, with the understanding that they would work with me to resolve them. Four months later I am still owed several hundred dollars and despite spending 5-10 hours doing all the legwork to make this easily resolvable, there is no timeline and no sign that they are interested in righting their wrongs. Oakland Acupuncture uses a third party billing service to handle their insurance claims and is disorganized (at best) and trying to take advantage of their patrons (at worst)."
"Best acupuncture treatment I've ever had. August is a highly educated and intuitive healer. He is a straight shooter that relays excellent treatments and lifestyle instructions for improving your health."
"The OAIMC team members are extremely knowledgeable and professional when it comes to all of their services provided. In my experiences over the past couple of years, the acupuncture & massage treatments are always coupled with a holistic health approach and personal consultation. Their yoga classes are also taught by great instructors and the tea/herb bar is always stocked. The atmosphere of the clinic and the treatment rooms are clean, welcoming and OAIMC offers a convenient DT Oakland location. Thank you August, Christina and the rest of the OAIMC team. Highly recommend!"
"I am so happy I went to Oakland Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine. I had been having severe back pain that motivated me to make my health a priority. August sat down and gave me a thorough diagnostic and after acupuncture and cupping I walked out with little to no pain left. I have a health plan in place with Chinese herbs and future assessments to get me to my optimal wellness. Thank you August for hearing me and giving me such a complete treatment that helps the symptoms but also the root cause."
"WARNING: Beware of Mohari/Oakland Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine Clinic’s deceptive billing practices; investigation on-going I went to receive acupuncture treatment from Dr. August back in March of 2016. Mohari advertise that they accept insurance, so upon my initial scheduling visit I provided my insurance card (I’m at Cigna) and they checked my insurance coverage to figure out my liability for each visit. Over the course of a month, I visited Mohari 8 times for treatment of a repetitive stress injury. I was told that when they checked my insurance, I would need to pay a $35 co-pay and then would be good to go. I thought this made sense since their price list online had a fee of $150 listed for the initial visit with follow-ups costing $85 per visit. This however was not at all how they ended up billing for my visits. After a few weeks of treatment, I received a statement from my insurance company providing the explanation of benefits. I had been billed $3,660 for 8 visits (for an average of $460 per visit; some visits were actually $600 for a single 60 min session). While my insurance plan covered 70% of this, I was responsible for 30%, which the insurance company deducted directly from my Flexible Spending account (FSA, designed to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses with pre-tax money). I was therefore left on the hook for over $1,000 of out-of-pocket expenses, more than if I had not used insurance at all and been a cash-pay patient. I immediately contacted August at Mohari and have had 3 meetings with him to try and sort this out, but now over 6 months later it is clear he has no intention of helping to resolve this situation so I feel I must warn other potential patients to be VERY wary of the billing that Mohari quotes. During my discussions with August, several things emerged: 1) While it looks like a single business, Mohari has a shadow company (same exact employees, rooms, equipment) called Oakland Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine clinic. If you are cash pay, you are “treated” by Mohari and charged $85 per repeat acupuncture visit. If you are insurance, you are “treated” by OAIM and billed up to $600. I was never told of these two companies and the difference in their billing 2) When I challenged how August justifies being paid $600 ($420 from insurance, $180 from me) for the same thing he bills cash-pay patients for $85, he said that he normally never seeks to collect the co-insurance amount from the patients, as this was his “protest against western medicine financial systems”. Where things went wrong for me is that I had a FSA which meant the insurance company takes the money out directly for out of pocket charges, rather than requiring the service provider to collect the money directly from the patient. However, August and Mohari’s practice of systemically up-charging insurance companies at up to 6x the cash-pay rate, and then not collecting the co-insurance is ILLEGAL as the insurance company places the co-insurance structure to limit utilization of unnecessary procedures. In addition, creating these liabilities for patients racks up hundreds if not thousands of dollars for patients that insurance companies may now pursue to collect from former Mohari patients. 3) August’s attitude of appearing to want to make progress at resolving this issue, but really just delaying resolution shows a complete disregard for his patients. In fact, on numerous occasions, he referred to himself as the “little guy” in the big medical establishment. I would like to point out that us patients are the real little guys here. It is deceptive and potentially criminal to not disclose a shadow business, the fees you are charging, and systematically avoiding collecting fees that are part of their contract with insurance providers. I wanted to share my experience so that other's may avoid Mohari and their deceptive billing practices."
