About the Needle Rock Visitor Center
Needle Rock Visitor Center, located in Whitethorn, California, is a travel agency offering information and services for visitors exploring the nearby Sinkyone Wilderness State Park and the Lost Coast Trail. The center, originally the home of Calvin Cooper Stewart and his family, provides resources for camping, hiking, and backpacking in the area. Visitors can register and pay fees at an iron ranger when the center is closed, as there is no phone or reliable cell phone reception. The park offers a variety of hiking options, from easy day hikes to challenging multi-day treks along the rugged coastline. The center also provides maps and information for those planning their visit, as well as recommendations for gear and safety precautions. Primitive campsites are available throughout the park, with options for both trail camps and environmental campgrounds. Visitors can also explore Usal Beach, known for its scenic beauty and opportunities for birdwatching and surf fishing. Whether embarking on a short day hike or a longer backpacking adventure, Needle Rock Visitor Center is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts looking to experience the natural beauty of the California coast.

Reviews of Needle Rock Visitor Center
"Beautiful and untouched. But scary driving in or out. Hope no one else come the opposite direction. Also 4wd highly recommended on this clay road"
"The drive to the site requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the last 3 1/2 miles because it’s a one lane dirt road. It would be easy to slide off the edge of the steep road while passing another car. Be extra careful if rain is predicted because the roads could get covered up with mud quickly.I recommend the 3 mile hike (total 6 miles round trip) hike to Bear Cove. Start from the visitor center and go south down the road. At 2.7 miles you take the 3/10 mile trail down to the beach. Another amazing hike it’s on the lost Coast Trail North of the visitor center. Crossing Whale Gulch stream can be very difficult depending on water flow. If available you can sleep overnight in the barn for $30. No reservation, first come first served. Check with host at the visitors center."
"Beautiful place, even in the deep fog. Yes, the narrow single-lane dirt road is a bit treacherous so 4wd is definitely recommended. The visitor center is inviting and so are the camp hosts. We hardly saw blue sky during our overnight stay but it's worth it. We will always remember waking up with dozens of elk quietly grazing mere feet from our van."
"Wonderful and beautiful spot for relaxing and hiking. Great 6ish mile round trip hike to Bear Harbor with beautiful ocean and forest views. The visitor center is a great spot to walk on the beach and enjoy a great ocean view. There are several spots for camping before and at Bear Harbor. Also camping spots near the visitor center. Be careful as the road in is narrow(I drive a F150 and made it)and passable with a 2wd drive vehicle but 4wd recommended in wet weather. If you're lucky you'll see some wild animals. I saw a Bobcat and many Hawks. Definitely worth the visit."
"Fantastic lodge style visitor center for the incredible southern segment of the lost coast hike. Maps and informational exhibits about elk can be found inside. Several campsites and a barn can be reserved nearby. Be prepared for a long, steep, unpaved road down to the visitor center and trailhead. Likely unpassable in the rain without a 4x4."
