"Not at all surprised by the many 1-star reviews. Every time I call customer service the rep sounds like they are having the worst day of their life. On top of that, everything I've done to resolve errors committed by Medica results in additional mistakes and then the need to send paperwork by fax (!) or snail mail to attempt to correct said mistakes."
"Worse customer service, you get a different story every time. They have an app but you have to have the right policy in order to use it. In this day and age you should be able to get notifications of cancellations right away so you can give to new insurance company, but they say it's takes 7-14 days to get an email or letter."
"My family of three had a qualifying life event at the end of 2023 that lost us the coverage we had. We needed coverage for one month (December), and then my employer would begin offering coverage in 2024. That one month of coverage has turned into a never-ending nightmare of mail, contradicting premium amounts, endless phone calls and utter disconnect between Medica departments. I had one medical expense in the month of December for half the amount of the December premium, and for some reason it isn't covered (my wife and son's coverage doesn't start until January 1, 2024 according to the paperwork). I've been on the phone with nearly every department trying to understand the situation, and each department sends me to another. To be fair, every representative has been friendly and helpful to the best of their ability. But trusting Medica with my family's health coverage has been nothing but a headache. I would not recommend."
"One star is far too many. The most laughably incompetent customer service I have ever interacted with in any context. I called to determine coverage of some eye surgery. Rep. #1 couldn't tell me if the surgery was covered until I provided code numbers for the procedures. I got the numbers from my provider and called again. Rep. #2 couldn't tell me anything because "the people who know about the codes are at lunch." Rep. #3 confirmed two of my three procedures as covered, but was uncertain about whether my provider was in-network for the third procedure at the location where I was planning to have the surgery. (My provider clinic has four locations, two of which did not correspond to the information Medica has.) He said that I should have my provider send Medica the tax code (!) that they intend to use for reimbursement. Calls to my provider to do that proved fruitless. Today I got Rep. #4, for whom I had to spell the word "corneal," and who read haltingly from a text about outpatient surgery coverage, struggling with several words. Run from these folks as far and as fast as you can."
"So it is Saturday, December 30, 2023 and I go into CVS to minute clinic and to get an antibiotic. CVS tells me that my coverage doesn't start until January 1, 2024! I have had Medica coverage now for 3 years and last used this card a few weeks back at this CVS and it all worked fine. Somehow there is a glitch where current year coverage has been disabled and 2024 coverage has not been activated. Now, I call Member Services and find myself in a loop that finally says call back in normal office hours! So just for kicks I try the 800 number for pharmacists and eventually Jose answers. Jose takes my name, ID, dob, blah blah blah. 30 minutes of tap tap tap...please bear with me. Tap tap tap. Sorry, no coverage until January 1, 2024! "But Jose, this is absurd. I have coverage for 2023 and used it right here at CVS a few weeks ago"! Sorry, sir. No coverage for you until January 1, 2024!! The Pharmacists at CVS are listening to all this and laughing out loud. And so am I! "Please try again Jose! " Tap tap tap tap. "Sorry. No coverage until January 1, 2024"! So I pay the bill and move along glad that I wasn't at an emergency room! To be sure I will be laying very low until 12:01 tomorrow morning! Can't make stuff like this up! Surely a company of this size can get an obvious error sorted out on a Saturday, no?"
