"This is by far the worst “hospital” I’ve been too. I couldn’t believe how filthy this place was. The doctors did not have a single care for patients time. I was told that it would take a couple of hours before they could attend my need which was understandable, but when I was finally called in to sit on one of the hospital beds and they made me wait another half HOUR before they could send a doctor to help me. Granted it was a weekend and they would be understaffed, but they had literal doctors laughing and talking while they had a wait room of people who had been there for countless hours! If they were on lunch breaks, they need to do that outside the hospital, not inside where people have been waiting to be attended to! If you are suffering from a gun shot or a snake bite and this was the closest hospital to go to, I’d definitely encourage you to bite the bullet and go to a better hospital, because these people will let you suffer or die to have a stupid conversation instead of treating you with care. Worst hospital in Berkeley hands down!"
"DONT GO HERE FOR ER CARE. Super gnarly. Getting the blood draw / iv was so painful!! There was blood everywhere. I had to sit with it slightly wrong and rather painful in my arm for 8hours and we never used it again. In the end I got lucky and met the surgeon I needed BUT ONLY BECAUSE he was filling in for someone else."
"Visited ER at noon in my room at 7:00 but ERs get crazy so I understand that timeline. Saw great physicians who noted that my broken pelvis did not need surgery. I hadn’t eaten all day but didn’t get food because the floor staff said my chart showed I was scheduled for surgery. Ok mistakes happen. No food for a day at all. Next day I’m supposed to get PT as that is very important for broken pelvises but they sent OT instead. PT was called in later. I am from out of state so I needed a week in an assisted living to get me strong enough to fly. Can’t walk extreme pain moving, no weight support on leg. The original case manager in ER was very helpful and explained my choices. She was going to run them through to see who had room. Extremely rude case manager dropped off a list of places that had room to accept me that evening (this is day 2) Day 3 no contact from case manager and no clue what, what, when how I was to move to the facility. Case manager failed to tell the support services so no PT scheduled that day. Short curt call from case manager on phone when we tried to find out next steps. She said “I showed you the choices” but still no clue what to do since she has never called back. She also asked if I had transportation but I said I can’t move and I’m in pain when sitting. She said an ambulance would cost me and I asked about insurance coverage and was told my doctor would have to approve it to be covered.4 hours later I’m still sitting here not knowing where I’m to go and how. The communication between departments and patients is horrible. Day 3 I’m still in the same socks and gown they put me in in the ER. The plus side is the Er staff were all very helpful. The nurses doctors and support persons on the floor could not have been kinder or nicer. When I asked for a new gown they could not have been more apologetic. Not only professional but kind and personable."
"My homeless woman of color friend delivered her baby at Alta Bates last week. One day later, just before Xmas, a Social Services worker came to her room to reassure her of future housing was being arranged. Everything was fine and normal, even very 'friendly'. She was elated and happy. Soon after, three cops showed up with the worker and yanked the baby from her saying it was 'precautionary' because she was homeless and has a 'past'. No one was there to counsel her or help her understand what was happening. She was overcome by grief and fear. Traumatized, she left her room to seek for help. When she returned after an hour, the hospital had labeled her 'AMA' and refused to allow her to return to her room. Five times, she tried to get back, each time she was treated like a criminal and barred from returning. Walkie-talkies were deployed to bar her from approaching the hospital. She was bleeding and in pain, just wanted to rest in her room and continue to recuperate from childbirth. Yet, she was denied her patient right for proper treatment only 1 1/2 days after giving birth there. All these happened a day before Xmas. On Xmas eve, she was staying in a shed without her baby. Were Jesus born in Alta Bates, he would have been taken away by Social Services. Instead of three wise men, there were three cops. Alta Bates would have denied Mother Mary getting proper care and denied her access to the hospital, because she was homeless and indigent. This the "Health Equity" and "Quality Care" advertised on Sutter Health webpage. Where is the Xmas spirit? Where is the compassion? Social Services preemptive strike trumps hospital's mission to care. Callousness, Inhumane, Snooty, and Brutality are thy names."
"If you’re thinking of giving birth here let me stop you and say DO NOT! Horrendous hospital setting, the staff are incredibly inept, you have to expect the worst on top of it already being an incredibly stressful day/experience. If you’re able to plan your birth at any other hospital I would do it now I am saving you a very traumatic experience. And to Sutter get your act together you are a careless organization and it SHOWS! How many more have to die?"
