Reviews of Shelter Hotels
"Carpet looked quite old, made me not want to step on their carpet. Their desk looked not sturdy, rather frail and old, so I could not even put my bag there. Their room looked much worse than their lobby. This looks a lot less than other 2 or 3 star hotels I saw. Room quality was much less than SureStay and BestWestern. Appliances: Their window heater ran for 10 hours, which means it could not reach 76F after running for 10 hours. Their refrigerator door would not close easily; it needed more work than other hotels' refrigerators to simply close it. Charges: They charged $200 for a deposit, much higher than a lot nicer hotels like Aventura ($50) and Hampton Inn (Hilton, $25). They charged $30 for parking, whereas other hotels nearby provide free parking (Aventura hotel, Oxford Palace hotel, etc.). System: They did not have a machine to swipe ID or system to type info. Instead, they physically copied ID. They had copies of ID stacked up where people can see the information on the ID copies (not in a safe box). Service: They never brought towels, after the front desk said "I will get it for you." The bald Latino guy smiling at the front desk rather creeped me out, after being charged highly for a low quality room, being perceived as only money to them. Alternatives: Oxford Palace hotel and Aventura hotel in Koreatown offer a lot better quality rooms than here and also complimentary parking."
"It was a decent place to stay. Housekeeping cleaned up pretty well and didn’t touch our things. They replaced the towels. Wish the hotel told us about extra fees upfront. One night we got locked out bc the key cards stopped working and we needed to go to the front desk to exchange for new ones. It was also kind of weird how there was only one entrance at the parking lot area but no entrance to the lobby (you get to the lobby through elevator/stairs). Also the window just looked into the lounge room/other rooms. Bathroom had no ventilation either but it did have lots of shelves which were very convenient"
"Place is decent and employees are professional but the miscellaneous extra charges could be a little too much. The incidental deposit is charged based on how many nights you're staying. One night is around $100 for deposit. Stay three night and you do three times of that. On top of the almost $30 dollar parking fee per day. These are not mentioned when you book online. Again decent place but there are other hotels nearby that won’t shock you with extra charges once check in time comes."
"Cool and eclectic, funky design choices. Reasonable online rate. Redone by a bold visual artist, the common area is Warhol, Koons and Haring-inspired. I loved the laminate flooring in the room instead of carpet. Our view was laughable. Really. We could do nothing but laugh while we waved at the neighbor's Husky. Staff were friendly and helpful, neighborhood is walkable to amazing KBBQ options."
"Lots of hidden fees at this place. Got charged $20 a night for "service fees" and $30 a night for parking. None of this was mentioned or included in the booking quote or confirmation email. Website even says parking included. Didn't know about this until they tried to charge me at checkin. Feels very scummy of them. Hotel itself is fine and location is convenient. Just be prepared for the price to be inflated $50/day."
