"From the moment I walked in, the front desk staff was so kind and attentive - then the hygienists were both very gentle and did a great job explaining exactly what they were doing. When Dr. Fick came in to check it was clear he had reviewed my records, and reminded me of some long-range work that I should have done in the next couple of years so it won't come as a surprise. They didn't pressure me to get any procedures I don't need, just let me know that I have some 20+ year old fillings that might need to be replaced. Great team, left feeling good."
"My experience with First Choice Dental has been a mixed bag. I first came to them in October of 2022 with wisdom tooth pain. They were able to squeeze me in at the Waunakee office and the oral surgeon who removed my tooth was amazing. My second experience with First Choice Dental was at the Park St location with Dr. Fick. To start off, I want to say the assistants have always been amazing. Thank you Amber for making me feel comfortable and kind. I came in mid-September for my first cleaning. The assistant was thorough with my cleaning. Then, Dr. Fick came in and immediately, without getting to know me or my situation, began a laundry list of issues that needed to be fixed. Initially, he told me I needed one root canal, three crowns, and a wisdom tooth removed. Wow, great. That’s a lot. I had very limited access to dental care when I was younger, but I always brushed every night in addition to flossing (intermittently, my bad) and used mouthwash. So, as you may imagine, I was caught offguard. I started to ask questions, but I felt that each question was dismissed and I was given a non-answer. Before I knew it, I was being ushered out to the front desk where the front desk lady scared me into telling me I needed supplemental dental insurance? Surprise—I did not need supplemental dental insurance. A root canal was scheduled for me immediately and I sat in my car thinking to myself, “What just happened?” So much for making sure your patient understands and is comfortable with the plan. I was in zero pain, so hearing all of this was shocking. A few days later, I went to the Waunakee location to get the root canal with Dr. Lee. Dr. Lee is skilled at what he does. The root canal was painless. The worst part was the anesthesia that made my cheek puff up. Dr. Lee answered my questions and talked me through each step, which I appreciated. His assistant was kind. My only qualm was the lack of post-op care instructions. I had to call them myself after my root canal to find out what I could and could not do. Additionally, no one told me that I had super strong anesthesia that would leave me numb for 9 hours or make me extremely tired (I drove home alone, nearly dozing off several times). I was puffy for about 3 days and a bruise stuck around for approximately 2 weeks. The area where the injection was injected was painful for about 1 month after. I went in again to get the build-up and temporary crown. When I went in, Dr. Fick said to me, “You actually need a second root canal.” That didn’t sit right with me. If I needed the second one, why was it not mentioned until now? I feel like they didn’t put the time and effort into reviewing my chart and images. When I went in to get the permanent crown in, Amber was just a pleasure and joy to work with. The day I went in, their system was down so they had no access to anything. I believe Dr. Fick maybe said two sentences to me in that visit, which I wish he had talked to me more about what to expect. My permanent crown was pressure sensitive for about 1 month after. It has just started to get better and no one told me what to expect. I just went to No Fear Dentistry in Madison and talked to a dentist who told me it was normal. But all that worrying could have been avoided if someone had told me. I have switched dentists and am with No Fear Dentistry now. They are so caring in their approach. I have only had a consult, but I feel validated and listened to as opposed to when I was at First Choice Park St. Also, I had two cavities that the team at First Choice failed to bring up to me? That was frustrating, because why didn't they tell me? I feel that the lack of individuality, care, and attention to detail were missing in my experience. However, I try to look at things holistically. Pros were the dental assistants (Amber) and Cassy at the desk who would answer my endless insurance questions. Cons were the lack of detail to my care and lack of post-op info. They will get the job done, but beware the lack of attention to your personal care."
"I am not one to write reviews, but First Choice Dental - Downtown is hands down the best dental office I’ve been to since I moved to Madison 15 years ago. The staff are kind and very good at explaining things. I never feel like they are out to just get my money. Great dentists and great staff!"
"I’ve been going to First Choice Dental since 2016, but today was my last day going back. Like others have mentioned before me, one of the front desk ladies is very curt and cold. Not welcoming, not understanding, not empathetic. Just not good customer service at all. Edit because I’m unable to reply: below you’ll find where they falsely accuse me of arriving “more than 15 minutes” late to my appointment. So on top of having horrible customer service they also lie."
"South Park st. Office Rock's...Jennifer was the best! My teeth needed some deep cleaning and she was very patient with me as my appointment went way into her lunch break..she made me feel good about taking care of my dental health and assured me that my teeth weren't the worst case. The front desk staff was helpful and knowledgeable and very upbeat! I also took my 4 yr old to his first appointment there and we will continue to go there in the future! Thank you!"
