Reviews of Masterpiece Hotel
"I'm writing this in 2024 due to a Maps reminder of my last visit there with my wife a decade ago. Things may have evolved since then, I wouldn't know, but the Masterpiece was one of our favorite places to stay and we had come to know the place. First, the faux masterpieces hanging everywhere: if you have even the slightest familiarity with classical western art and perhaps even just a touch of a sense of humor about it, you'll be off to a great start. The included snack/breakfast periods were great times to be there as what they served was not a vast choice but worthwhile for the good quality, a step up from what they put out at the big chains. It was and likely still is served in the lower floor of the big cylindrical structure that forms the centerpiece of the architecture. The big windows make the room light and airy, and the big rounds that were then many of the tables made it very welcoming to be able to sit down and chat with other guests, or if you are traveling as a family. The gym is small but useful, and we ancient folk remember Jack LaLanne, a fitness icon of the 60s. In his later years he lived just a bit more than a few blocks away and worked out in that gym - there was a letter on the wall attesting to his approval and reminding us to get and stay in good condition. The upgraded rooms generally have a slight split-level layout which is kind of nice if you have a sweet tooth for that kind of thing. Back in the day if one was checking in at the earliest opportunity and it wasn't a really packed time, if one asked nicely it was possible to take a quick peek at your proposed room (provided other choices were available, and it may have helped that we were repeat customers). And then there is the penthouse. Not inexpensive and almost never discounted, it might be wise to book it well in advance. It occupies the entire top floor of the central cylinder, and you can not only look out of those great windows toward the bay, but a side door opens to a tiny deck toward the back side of the building to give an open view to the north over that part of Morro Bay and a bit of the landscape to the east. Others have described the fabulous hot tub/bath part of the suite, and the bed was huge and comfortable. While I realize things may have changed (or not!), I long to return."
"My most recent trip was fabulous. The staff was very friendly and check in was quick and easy. The hotel overall is clean and the rooms are clean and spacious. Its my favorite place to stay. Please on your next romantic getaway ask for a "Romance Package" for a small fee the staff will create a nice setting for you and your partner. I just had it done and it was a lovely surprise. Thank you Masterpiece Hotel for making my stay a pleasant one."
"Booked a room here with my wife for the weekend, it was ok. Reason for 1 star, they placed a $100 hold on my card AFTER I paid in full, now I understand that is a hold for insurance of the room, however its been held for over a week on my account and still showing pending. I was told by the front desk this was not going to happen, no charge would occur but its been on hold for over a week now. So needless to say, I wont be returning to this place anytime soon."
"This property is a hidden gem. Every room has all of the comforts you are looking for - fridge, microwave, great beds. The entire property is very clean and well maintained, great breakfast. The best surprise was that all rooms and public spaces has professionally framed posters of master works of art. It truly lives up to its name ☺️"
"My family enjoyed our stay here. It has a nice cozy feel to it because it’s small and not crowded or loud. Harry at the front desk was very welcoming and friendly. I’m not sure who the lady was who worked the morning hours, but she didn’t speak at all to us as we coming and going through the lobby area. I even said good morning to her and she still didn’t speak. The breakfast is basic like toast, bagels, coffee, OJ, muffins, oatmeal/yogurt and a waffle maker. The fruit was old, I could tell both mornings we were there the bananas were the same ones from the days before. They were peeling and exposed from the tops so I’m sure they weren’t fresh. They have a hot tub/jacuzzi room which was neat, but when I walked in there I could hardly breathe because of the heat from the tub and the humidity. The windows were propped open but it was still very stuffy and hot but if that’s not an issue to you, it’s a great amenity. Our room was great, beds were comfortable and good cable tv. It was just odd that the microwave was on the bathroom counter right next to the sink, I thought that was incredibly dangerous and unusual but nothing to cry over. There is no room service, so we were careful not to accumulate too much trash. Parking is free and very convenient since it’s literally right outside the main door. There’s no elevators but we were only there for 2 nights so we didn’t have much. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and will likely book this hotel again for future stays in Morro Bay."
