Reviews of Hearst Hacienda Lodge
"Looking to find the most remote location for a step back in time? This is it. Relive the days of the Hacienda. This historic property has surprises at every turn. So beautiful. We were there on a weeknight. We knew not to expect wi -fi or food or any services but that was not the case. Snacks and water were provided. There was a TV in the room but we enjoyed the quiet instead. The cantina was open so we went and so should you. Check out the fireplace, one of the biggest I've ever seen. The murals on the walls were fascinating. The patrons were all military from the base. Yes, it's located on base. Others mentioned taps and revelry but we didn't experience that. We did hear coyotes and it was a full moon. We loved just walking around the building observing details of 100 year old construction."
"Exquisite historical lodge designed by Julia Morgan, very helpful staff, well maintained facility and grounds. Always a joy to visit and share with family and friends."
"•Great Value. Price ranges from $50/nt for a "Cowboy Room" that has double bed, mini fridge, microwave, and a bath that is down the hall. But, $95 can get you two rooms with bath. There are also 3 bedroom/kitchen/2 bath units for less than $200/nt. •Dining options are limited: pizza at the bowling alley, food purchased at the PX, about 3 nights a week the Hacienda kitchen has a supper for purchase(good value) •Entertainment: bowling($5 game), pool and other games at the Rec Hall. The history, beautiful views, and quiet evenings are great, but be ready for revelry at 6:30am."
"Great historic old site. So quiet. Rooms are large, well appointed though spare. We came here knowing that the bar, snack bar and bowling alley may be closed, that we probably wouldn’t see the property manager, and that we would arrive after 4 pm so would used the lock box on the door to let ourselves in. All turned out to be true. Some rooms had AC in the windows and some did not. But ceiling fans kept it pleasantly cool. We brought our own food and coffee, but the vendor had coffee and filters and a couple of muffins upon our arrival. The full kitchen in our suite (we stayed in the lower commander’s suite) was spacious. Tub with shower and also had a powder room. During the day we visited the nearby mission San Antonio - restored and lovely. Then drove to Paso Robles (about 45 min away) to tour a brewery and get dinner. At night the base plays Taps at 10 pm (the coyotes howl along) and revelie at 6:30 am (blessedly brief). But both were kinda cool. Other than that the place was so quiet! Lots of wildlife. All in all a nice affordable place. Amanda, the desk and reservation manager was great. We would give 5 stars but a few minor detractor-vendors should vacuum out the lovely window sills, repair or put up screens on windows and doors where they are missing. The bathrooom in our suite needs a mirror, and one of the bedrooms needs light bulbs in the overhead light. All in all, a great place to stay and explore!"
"Very historic place for a night's visit. When making our reservation, the website was faulty and it was nearly impossible to reach the manager by phone (Gabriella?) and it seemed the only way to speak to a representative was to call the kitchen, where a nice lady was usually able to track down the manager. But the facility is worth a visit. For us, more than one night would have been too much. We were aware from the website that some rooms did not have AC and we never got a response back from Gabriella to our email when we asked if our room (Tower room B) was equipped with AC. But we took our chances anyway. Our luck of course, it did not have AC. We got by okay with the provided fan. The Hacienda is such a historic place that it's a shame the management is not up to the game. Although the Hacienda is within a military base it is probably operated by a vendor through a civilian contract. We enjoyed our stay but was surprised there appeared to be only one other customer's car in the parking lot during our visit. Be aware, food choices are very limited and your best bet for a meal will be the Subway sandwich shop down the road. But we found the isolation to be part of the attraction. . but for only one night."
