About the Steep Ravine
Steep Ravine is a campground, lodging, and park located on Rocky Point Road in Stinson Beach, California, United States. Dogs are allowed only in developed areas, with restrictions on trails, dirt roads, and backcountry areas. Visitors can reserve campsites and lodging six months in advance, with availability based on the park's maximum stay rules.
The institution is surrounded by the beauty of Mount Tamalpais State Park, offering stunning views of the Marin County hills, San Francisco Bay, and even the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range on clear days. Activities such as hiking, picnicking, and wildlife watching are popular, with volunteers providing information and programs at various locations within the park.
Camping options include first-come/first-serve sites at Pantoll or Bootjack Campgrounds, group campsites at Alice Eastwood Group Camp, and rustic cabins or seaside campsites at Steep Ravine Cabins and Environmental Campground. The park has regulations in place to protect natural and cultural resources, including restrictions on drone use, mushroom collecting, and pet activities.
Visitors are advised to arrive early to avoid heavy weekend traffic and to be aware of potential hazards such as poison oak, rattlesnakes, and mountain lions. Fees may apply for parking in certain areas, with options for payment via credit card, cash, check, or the Yodel app. Friends of Mount Tam and Save the Redwoods League are organizations that support conservation efforts within the park.

Reviews of Steep Ravine
"The cabins are fairly well maintained. Since I've been here before I know what to expect. No running water except for the upper path rooms where there is a sink and a flush toilet well maintained. The lower path room near where I was at cabin 4, The furthest cabin away from the others, Has an outhouse pit toilet which let's just say is very rustic with rusty bolts and hinges etc. But it all works just fine, didn't bother me a bit. Because its a lingering winter right nowThe weather hasn't turned to generate insects and it's quite windy. For a non-insulated cabin that translates to draftyBecause there is no weather stripping around the doors or windows. Just overpack for sleeping comfort with extra pads because that plywood platform that you sleep on doesn't get any softer at midnight if you're on a thinsulite pad. And the woodburning stove is in the socializing eating area with a dividing wall between the sleeping area so you will not get warmth from the stove at night. I also noticed the trail down to the beach has become more difficult to access. I went when there was a projected 0 tide hoping to be able to get out onto an extended beach but the surf was high and there was no way that was gonna happen. Be mindful of tide and surf reports if you plan to do any beach combing. Due to the steepness of trails I would not recommend bringing small children Unless you plan on carrying them in a pack."
"Lovely cabins with a great view. Not much to do around and the beach is very rocky. If you want a nice beach go to Stinson Beach for supplies and come back to a serine cabin. Bathrooms are good but a bit of a walk from the cabin. Water access close by. Otherwise it's just a wood cabin with a fireplace. Perfect getaway from it all"
"Amazing place. Steep Ravine is a great place to visit when you're in Northern California. Very quiet with a beach nearby, it's a perfect place to relax and see beautiful scenery. An interesting point is that Dorothea Lange lived in the cabin, during this period she took incredible photos of her family."
"I used to come here all the time as a child even though it was practically in my back yard, and we had a blast! My brother's and I would go on hikes and explore and we didn't miss our Game Boys one bit! This was a time before smartphones were a thing so I can't necessarily speak for kids today or whether not they would enjoy being off the grid or having temporary detachment of their feeds. My brothers and I came back as a memorial for our mother since we had so many happy memories staying in the cabins. While the cabins have had some updates over the years it was still as rustically cozy as I remember, and nothing comes close to beating the views you have from your cabin. Since your primary source of heat is a wood burning stove I'm not sure I would recommend the cabins for very young children. However if your kids or anyone else in your family love hiking, camping, nature, or if you remembered to pack the Jiffy Pop and fixings for s'mores, it truly is a memorable experience for most ages. Steep Ravine is such a treasure to the Marin County coastline. **YOU NEED RESERVATIONS to get a cabin** So plan your trip accordingly. You definitely do not want to miss out on an opportunity to stay at Steep Ravine, it is worth it."
