"Wow! A good retail experience is not so common, but an excellent experience- completely rare. Yet, thanks to the staff at Staples Tracy, that is exactly what I had. I was completely impressed. I started by doing a Happy Returns, and when I inquired at the cash register, Steven directed me to the right counter, where I was served immediately and it was sooo easy! The counter employee was very helpful. He even gave me a coupon for shopping which I was able to use. Then I went into the aisles to do some shopping where I was greeted by Jonathan, the store manager. He guided me to some products I was looking for and offered any assistance I may need. A few minutes later, another employee asked if I was finding everything I needed. I had a long list of various office supplies and I was able to find everything on my list. Later, I approached yet another employee who helped me get some large items from the shelf and carried them to the register. Check out was easy, and then to my great surprise, the cashier Steven offered to carry my large items out to my car for me. It was so refreshing to leave a store thinking, I need to tell more people what a great experience I had. I will definitely be going back when I need office supplies and the like. Thank you!"
"I’ve been a customer of Staples for decades. The two stars are specifically for the floor employees who were courteous and professional during numerous other visits and my purchase on 4/10/23. Unfortunately the item was defective so I returned to the store as soon as I had time during lunch two days later on 4/12/23, expecting to exchange it for a replacement. I was not greeted with a “hello” as usual, so I waited near the vacant checkout area. I was instructed by a 20-ish man in another area of the store a short time later to meet him at a particular register. I was asked what I needed. I presented the defective item, its original packaging, and my receipt, explained the situation of its failure to perform, and asked to exchange it for another. He refused. I pointed out that I was clearly within my return policy rights as stated on the receipt and in the store and again, that I wanted to exchange it for one that worked. He continued to refuse to process an exchange without any further explanation. I asked for the store manager, and he announced he was the store manager. I repeated my logical presentation a 3rd time as other customers browsed near by and began making their way towards the registers to complete purchases. With decades of retail and customer service on my resume, I added that product defects happen and I simply needed to exchange the item so I could get on with my business. After his third refusal to honor store (and consumer rights) policy, I asked for a refund, which was also refused. I replied that iin my decades of patronage I’d never experienced this level of customer service at Staples. I was informed that if I didn’t like it I could call the 800#. By then there were other customers lined up with no one else to check them out. I asked if it was really worth it to alienate a loyal customer for a $30 item that shouldn’t even have been offered for sale and left. I did call corporate customer service. They researched the sale, informed me I was completely within my rights, apologized, and refunded my purchase. Another review here mentioned customer service being “a lost art.” You can get office supplies at 3 other stores within a quarter mile of this Staples. When I decide to spend my money somewhere I look ant integrity, leadership, and good customer service. None of that was in evidence during my experience at Staples in Tracy. A store that doesn’t honor a simple clearly stated policy doesn’t deserve my business and I feel for the other employees who have to work under this immature leadership on a daily basis."
