Reviews of Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area
"Nice spot not far from downtown. There is a day fee but really is a nice hike and a great variety of shade and scenery."
"Now one of my new favorite hiking areas in east San Diego (actually Jamul). Very peaceful. Very serene. A ton of vegetation changes, a hawk, a coyote and an easy 5 mile loop trail with only about 680ft of Elevation gain. Was well worth the $4.89 forest service fee one has to pay to use this area. Free if you bring a current CA fishing or hunting license. ."
"Nice hike with many offshoots, but easy to follow the main trail. Went 4 days after a rain and there waa water in the creeks and crayfish in the pools right off the trail. Rocks for kids to climb, but watch for poison ivy. Easy hike for getting the kids out in nature."
"What an amazing place to hike. Depending on the route you choose, this is a great place for kids and families to explore. There are many different trails to choose from, some with shade and water, some completely exposed grasslands and mountain views. We enjoyed an approximate seven mile loop. Trails, at times, can be very steep. The climbs are shorter and steeper because most of the trails are old cattle ranching/fire roads. Highly recommend hike for cooler weather."
"I will never EVER get tired of coming here. They did recently impose a fee of $5 or so per person per day, so be prepared with that before visiting. While there, you can walk/hike through so many different areas and the views change with every season. In September, I saw coyotes and bats. In the spring, there are bountiful wild flowers and a stream, which includes a waterfall. You're just far enough outside of town to feel like you're truly getting away. Whether you come for an hour or you come all day, there's a lot to enjoy!"
