About the Business

The Osher Rainforest at the California Academy of Sciences is a stunning museum and tourist attraction located at 55 Music Concourse Drive in San Francisco, California, United States. Inside the dome, visitors can marvel at a magnificent neotropical rainforest that stretches 90 feet above, showcasing over 1,600 live plants and animals. From taxicab-like sun beetles to hardworking leafcutter ants and slithering Amazonian tree boas, there is an abundance of wildlife to observe.
Visitors can also take an elevator ride four stories down for a beneath-the-surface view of an Amazonian flooded forest, where they can come face-to-face with incredible animals that call these forests home. The rainforest exhibit is housed within a spectacular 90-foot-diameter glass dome, making it the largest of its kind in the world.
With temperatures ranging from 82–85 degrees and humidity at 75 percent or above, the rainforest instantly transports visitors to some of the most biodiverse places on Earth. From tropical butterflies and moths to exotic reptiles and amphibians, there is a wide variety of fauna to admire. Visitors can also surround themselves with tropical freshwater fish by taking the flooded forest tunnel, which passes through a 100,000-gallon Amazonian tank.
The Osher Rainforest opens 30 minutes after the museum opens Monday–Saturday, with slightly different hours on Sundays. Visitors can enter the rainforest on the Main Floor, across from the Academy Café. The California Academy of Sciences is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to regenerate the natural world through science, learning, and collaboration. Don't miss the opportunity to support affordable access for the community and receive a cool keychain as thanks for your donation!
Reviews
"The Rainforest Dome is the busiest spot of the building. There’s always a long line, but once you join, it goes by very quickly. Inside, the ambient air is warm and humid. Lots of butterflies fly inside this ecosystem. At the end of the tour you find yourself looking at a mirror, making sure no butterflies attach to your clothing. A fun experience."
"So many things to see and different topics to learn about! Feel like the regular ticket price of $45ish is a lil pricey but once you're in you understand why. If you're a tourist the CityPass C3 bundle is a really good deal."
"The rainforest is closed till Nov 12, 2023, but there's plenty to do at the California Academy of Sciences. You could spend a whole day there. Become a member today."
"A very cool indoor rainforest. A large spiraling walkway takes you up to the top, from which you take an elevator into the basement where the Steinhart aquarium and viewing for the large amazon tank is. There is a large number of very cool and unusual species in very well scaped terrariums around the walkway on the way up. The main atrium hosts a large variety of Butterfly and tropical bird species as well, highlights including the Javan Leafbird and burnished buff tanager."
"This was an amazing experience! The rainforest was the coolest part but there’s aquariums, educational sections and great animals to view!!"
