About the King Range National Conservation Area
The King Range National Conservation Area is a stunning blend of mountains and sea, with King Peak rising 4,088 feet just 3 miles from the ocean. Spanning 68,000 acres along 35 miles of California's north coast, this remote region is known as California's Lost Coast. It is the nation's first National Conservation Area, designated in 1970.
Visitors to the King Range NCA can explore Douglas fir-covered peaks for hiking and hunting, while the coast offers opportunities for surfing and fishing. The area also features world-class mountain bike trails and 42,585 acres of coastal wilderness.
The King Range Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 4:30PM, offering services such as trip planning advice, conditions information, maps, tide charts, and bear canister rentals. Permits are required for overnight use in the King Range Wilderness and can be purchased online. The quota system limits the number of permits issued at one time to protect the environment and ensure a wilderness experience free of large crowds.
The Paradise Royale Mountain Bike Trail System provides 24 miles of trails with ocean views, tabletops, gap jumps, wall rides, and a pump track. Winter storms and waves can make portions of the Lost Coast Trail dangerous or impassable, and heavy rains may cause trail closures due to downed trees or landslides.
Visitors are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles, including proper waste disposal and wildlife observation from a distance. If you encounter a sick or injured marine mammal, report it to the appropriate authorities. Whether you're a hiker, biker, surfer, or wildlife enthusiast, the King Range NCA offers a unique and unforgettable outdoor experience.

Reviews of King Range National Conservation Area
"The King Range NCA is the only area along 35 miles of California’s north coast which is still pristine. The landscape is too rugged for highway or road building, hence the title California’s Lost Coast. Backpacking and hiking is the best way to enjoy the sunsets from the beaches with black sand. One must be careful of the rip currents and undertows. We had to wait several minutes to an hour so we can safely get through narrow passage. People actually get hurt and killed when caught in the current. Please use caution ⚠️ and be safe. Bear cans are mandatory for overnight camping, lastly be cautious of rattle snakes, almost stepped in one."
"Such a neat spot with tide pools, seals, and sea lions! The lighthouse is really neat to look at, and there are volunteers inside that answer a lot of questions and have a couple things you can browse through or purchase. Unfortunately you cannot climb to the top of the lighthouse but you can go inside at the bottom. There are lots of picnic tables around this area so you can stop by and enjoy a snack or meal. You can walk down some stairs to the beach and peruse through the tide pools and see the sea lions and seals. Pretty neat spot to stop by if you’re in the area."
"Awesome beauty from the majestic tall redwood forests, up to the steep mountains and down to the rugged Lost Coast Trail. This is a wonderful place to bring family and friends or to get lost and enjoy some peace and quiet by yourself."
"Beautiful, wild place. You need a permit to stay overnight as well as bear canisters. The hike through the sand is brutal but worth it. Plus it's one of the few places you can just be surrounded by nature with yourself and your dog roughing it."
