Reviews of Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco
"I arrived at 8:30am on a Wednesday, and there were 50+ people already ahead of me. Google currently has their hours as 9-2:30, but the doors don't open until 9:30. Everyone needed to walk through a metal detector and have their purses go thru a scan. Most of the line was were there for pickup and weren't given a number at the door. I was there to apply for a visa, so I was given the number 14. I waited about 25 minutes until my number was called. I had all my docs ready and in order, I was out by 10:05. Appointments can no longer be made online. It's first come, first serve, so I recommend coming early in the morning. The number does not always update on the TV screen. Therefore, I recommend paying attention to the speakers or sit where you can see the counter windows that display the number above."
"When I arrived around 9:30 am to pickup visa, the waiting line extended to cleary st. I asked why last time when I submitted visa application, the pickup people didn't have to be in queue. Security guy replied because that's later in the day. So expect a shifty policy at interpretation of the staff, which is not a bad thing because they can actually see the waiting situations inside and make on-spot decisions. Waiting time for me was 3.5 hours for visa application document submission (Friday) and seemingly 2 hours picking up passport (Wednesday). Once you get a number for doc submission you can go out for lunch or something but be sure to return before your number is called. The only complaint is that they don't take appointments at the time (absurd) and there is no system at all so waiting time is complete unpredictable. So lower expectations and bring on your most happy go lucky persona. Once you are at the window, staff process super efficiently."
"Just my own experience: much better than before. Clean waiting hall, simple security flow, and clear information on the current window and number serving. Talked to two visa officers and both are professional and nice."
"Door opens at 9am. I got there at 8:20am and I was 10th in line. Overall efficientx Employees in the windows are fast and helpful. I got Q2 visa for only $60, but the approved time frame is shorter than what I requested. Overall pleasant experience, I give 4 stars because travel agents gang-up to cut lines, and let other travel agents butt in line after them. I hope the embassy security will do something to prevent line-cutting in the future."
"Very efficient. Arrived at 9:31am on a Wednesday, and there was a short line outside for 5-10min. When I got inside, I got #25, and they were already serving #9. I was out at 10:30 after spending less than 5 minutes at the counter. I arrived at 9:45am on a Monday to pick up my visa. There was no line at the first window, and I waited about 10 minutes at the next window to pick up my visa, and quickly paid and was out before 10:00am with the visa I applied for. I had a bunch of extra documents just in case, including flights and hotel confirmations, and they just handed those back to me after skimming my application and making sure everything required was there. There was a photo booth that was cash only for $10. Copy machines that accept coins. And bathrooms."
