Reviews of Torigoya
"From March 2024: Authentic Japanese restaurant with a unique menu. From organ meat to more stand chicken thighs all items are delicately prepared and quickly enjoyed. Definitely not a standard American dining experience but staff is welcoming so don't be afraid to try something new."
"This is my favorite place to eat Yakitori in Little Tokyo. I stopped by for dinner on a chilly night and it's so cozy inside. I visited 3 years ago during covid so business was slower than usual and tables were turning fast, however now it's probably hard to get seated. You can smell the fragrant juices of the chicken skewers if you're anywhere on the second floor of this shopping complex. I ordered to share, beef, soft and negi chicken thighs, chicken breast, chicken wings, chicken hearts and gizzards and chicken meatballs skewers. The grill master here is Japanese and he definitely knows how to preserve the succulent texture of the juices in the meat skewers while also giving you the smokiness from the charcoal. In addition to the yakitori they also have a la carte side items like Oyako Donburi, quite fluffy and seasoned just right and an incredible chicken broth congee that warms your soul. The name of this congee on the menu is Zousui Chicken congee with vegetables. The pricing structure is very fair given the location, our bill came out to be $65 for two people. FYI they have Kirin and Asahi on tap here! This little izakaya is definitely worth a visit."
"Order the CHICKEN NANBAN to add to your yakitori experience. It's boneless chicken battered and deep fried, topped with an egg-potato salad with a vinegar. This dish is an amazing appetizer with texture and great balanced acid. If you like TAKO WASABI (raw octopus and wasabi), this doesn't disappoint. The wasabi reads more refreshing than intense chili heat. I recommend shishito peppers if you're looking for a spicy gamble. I've ordered the agedashi tofu and kaarage on other occasions. They are good, but the NANBAN and TAKO WASABI are high quality and harder to find. On this night, we couldn't go crazy on ordering all the chicken skin skewers because they were low supply. (Only 1 skin skewer per table on this specific night.) If deciding between which chicken hearts, I enjoyed the SP and SPSP more than the regular ones. SP=special? SPSP=special^2? I prefer tomato>zucchini>shiitake. Of the sauces, yuzu is my favorite for its brightness. I think it pairs well with all the skewers. A little bit goes a long way. I tend to order one yuzu sauce to share for a table of 3 people. I always recommend calling the restaurant to make reservations. For a 6:15pm weekday reservation, I called the same day (@ 5pm) to get a table for 3; I was lucky. On other occasions, I've booked a week in advance for a weekend dinner reservation. I've been here a total of 4 times in 18 months. The best time to call is during dinner service or an hour before the restaurant opens. If deciding between counter or table seating, the counter is worth doing at least once. My brother likes to write his name down when he visits Torigoya. He comes later in the evening when the 5- or 10-skewer sets are sold out and it's a la carte ordering. The wait is "
"Torigoya is a small yakitori spot that fills up very quickly so get there when it opens or you’ll have to wait. When seated, you have a paper slip to order skewers and then they have a menu with items and prices. Their staff are hustling to serve all the guests and they were timely, despite being so busy. Unfortunately they were out of Chicken Nanban when we ordered. All the skewers were very good, no complaints. The chicken thigh is incredibly tender, and the soft thigh is even more! The sauce is flavorful but maybe a little bit too much. They use the same sauce for any of their skewers so I prefer the salted option to let the chicken and charcoal flavor shine. Prices are average for yakitori in LA, but it tastes above average and they don’t skimp out on portion size or ingredient quality."
"Long wait since we stopped by to put our name down up front at 7pm and didn’t get seated until 8:50pm. We saw so many great reviews about this place and are huge fan of izakaya, so we decided to walk to all the near by shops and got onigiri at one of the stores to hold us over. What a great call to wait since it was hand down the best skewers restaurant we’ve been to in the US. If you had a chance, get everything with sauce. There wasn’t a huge difference in flavor than dry but they’re definitely more juicy. The meat was lean and just flavorful by itself. We ordered cucumber with special sauce and ot surprisingly a delicious choice to have as a side dish. The miso sauce can also be a dip for the skewers. The sodobodon (ground chicken rice bowl) was a must. All the veggies skewers were delish as well. Cannot recommend this place enough if it wasn’t for the wait, but what good foods weren’t worth waiting for right?"
