Reviews of Visa Office of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China
"Edit: this review was originally written in June 2023 Had a surprisingly easy-breezy visa appointment experience contrary to some of these reviews. They now have online appointments that you can book before arriving— no need to wait overnight or come super early. We had a 9:30am appointment and got there around 9:15 right before they started letting people in— looks like they maybe open only at 9:30 instead of 9am like on Google maps. There were already maybe 100 people in line so we weren’t super optimistic about being seen in a timely manner but the line moved quickly once they opened. You need to bring your appointment confirmation page with you, otherwise they may not let you in— a lady was stuck at the entrance looking for her appointment confirmation on her laptop. You’re given a number once someone at the door checks that you have an appointment confirmation— you won’t be necessarily seen at your appointment time, the number depends on your place in line. We got number 18 which meant a lot of people in line in front of us were just picking up visas/documents. Once inside, we waited maybe 20min for our number to be called, and then it took less than 10 min for the lady to sift through our documents and send us on our way with a receipt for visa pickup in a week. We were out by 10:15am. It was surprisingly efficient! More than enough time for our 2-hr parking spot we found down the street. Edit: when we came back the following week to pick up our visas, we came at around 11:30 and were in and out within 15min. Overall very happy it was so efficient."
"Note as of January 2024 there are less stringent requirements for the application for an L (tourist) visa - no flight confirmations, hotel reservations, or invitation letters needed-- which has greatly simplified the application process. At this time there are also no appointments required for the visa consulate. Got there 5min before opening on a rainy Monday morning and there were already about 30 people in line already. Upon passing through security you take a number and wait to be called up. There are multiple counters and it took about 20min to go through ten people. The whole process is pretty smooth as long as you have all your paperwork ready. Would recommend bringing quarters just in case you need to use their copy machine - I ended up needing to make a copy of an ID which I hadn't expected. After you submit your passport and paperwork they give you a receipt for pickup-- my application was ready to be picked up after three days (a lot faster than expected). You also need to take a number for visa pickup but because there are fewer counters for this line it moved more slowly than the line for applications - took about an hour to go through 15 people. All in all the experience was surprisingly smooth!"
"good experience. No appointments for now, this can change. line starts around 8:30 doors open about 9:30. I was there EXTREMELY early. It wasn't necissary but everyone, from the people in line, the gaurds, to the staff in the consolate were polite and friendly. Thanks for making the process to securing a visa for travel not as painful as it could be, meeting and being around kind people make the wait what could have been mundane, but instead a valuable experience."
"Not a terrible experience - have had worse experiences at the DMV. To submit your visa application, you need to have an appointment and have the confirmation printed out. Go straight to the security guard and they will check that confirmation - the time on your appointment doesn't matter, it just guarantees you'll be seen that day. You'll get a number that's sequentially assigned. I went on a Monday at 10am and the wait was about 30 minutes with 25 people ahead of me. Three counters open. As long as you have all your documents in place, your experience will be fine. Make photocopies of everything beforehand as the copy machine there seems finicky. There are also photo booths for $10, though they didn't need physical photos for my application for some reason. To pick up your passport, which is 4 business days later for regular applications, you queue outside in a line until the guard lets you in. You don't need an appointment but make sure you have the pickup receipt they give you at submission. I went on a Friday at 11am, which is the worst day and the worst time to go - I stood outside in line for about an hour before the security guard let us in. Inside, you go straight to counter 1 to get a number, and then you stand in another line for the cashier. Another 30 minutes of waiting for the cashier. No fingerprinting at this consulate - they still issue the old visas. You're done after that! Honestly, the hardest part of the entire process was filling out the application online. The rest is just patience. Good luck, and don't go on Fridays. Tip: Take Muni route 38 or 38R here. No need to worry about parking or having your car smashed. Not everyday you have a government office next to a bus stop."
"Friendly staff and security guards. There is restroom available, and you can ask for it while queuing outside. All will need to queue except those come for pick-ups. I found this two flyers given super helpful, more specific than online. If you are applying visa for kids, please make sure each applicants has a copy of parents’ passport. Photocopy of Chinese IC will need both sides to be valid. If the child is born outside China, please make sure the parent’s visa status on their birthday are provided with photocopy of visa of the country where the kids were born. There is photocopied machines but only takes 1, 5 dollar bills. NO printing service on site, please please make sure you print everything or research on which print service shop near by are open at that time. If you missed something, you can come back before they close 2/30 to re-submit. If you only come for collection, advices are come after 12 pm so the morning crowd is gone."
