"I could probably go on and on about my experience at this cultural center and museum. I learned a lot of horrible things, but also a lot of beautiful ones. Mandy had SO much knowledge to share, and she did so generously and with a great sense of humor. I couldn't help feeling American society overall could learn a lot from the Kumeyaay people. By the way, the Kumeyaay still live! This was an important take away for me. While it is true that they suffered genocide and were forced into reservations in remote areas, they do live on, they're not all gone like an extinct species or something. The people have worked together through generations to survive and keep their culture alive. Like I said there is sadness but also beauty. Anyway, I am also a bit of museum nerd, and I want to add this museum is really well organized and curated. There are tools from thousands of years ago, exquisite basketry from the last few centuries, and contemporary artwork from local children (precocious children). There are child-oriented exhibits and different things people can touch, smell, or listen to. I could go on. Bottom line, I really encourage anyone to go!"
"Small cultural museum with knowledgeable staff to educate you. No admission, but donations are a good idea. A very good overall introduction to the cultural aspects of the Barona peoples and the ravages caused by the white man. Very interesting presentation about the origins of the Barona peoples. Small gift and book shop."
"Nicely set up and very informative displays on Kumeyaay history, culture, and language. There is a lot to learn about the profound connection people have had with these lands for thousands of years and about the post-contact history most of us were not taught in our U.S. history classes. Mandy was working when we went to the museum. She was very friendly and we learned a lot from her. Thank you Mandy!"
"Extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff. Great exhibits to interest a wide range of ages. Highly recommended! Free admission. The museum itself is well done but not very big, so it could take from 30 minutes to 2 hours to explore depending on how much you read and interact with the displays. Plus there is a Little Free Library right outside!"
"Had a great time with family and friends at the Powwow ❤️"
