About the Houghton Park
Houghton Park, located at 6301 Myrtle Avenue in Long Beach, California, is a beautiful park with a rich history. The park spans 27 acres and offers a variety of amenities for visitors of all ages. The park was originally donated in 1924 by the Houghton family in memory of Col. Sherman Otis Houghton and his wife Eliza Donner Houghton. The park features palm trees planted by Stanley Houghton, and the community recreation center now stands where the barn once stood.
Visitors to Houghton Park can enjoy three baseball diamonds, a soccer field, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a skate park. The park also has a playground, picnic areas, and restrooms. The park's facilities include a Teen Center, Senior Center, and Afterschool/Learning Hub Program. The park also offers youth sports programs for the community.
Houghton Park has a rich history and has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years. The park's community recreation center was named after former Long Beach Vice Mayor Doris Topsy-Elvord in 2021. Doris Topsy-Elvord was a longtime advocate for equity and the first Black woman elected to the Long Beach City Council.
For reservations for picnic areas, softball fields, and building rentals, visitors can call 570-3111. The park's weight room is available for teens and seniors. Visitors are asked to observe the park's rules and regulations, which can be found on the Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine website.
